d) sequencing events leading to Roman military domination of the Mediterranean basin and Western Europe and the spread of Roman culture in these areas;

e) assessing the impact of military conquests on the army, economy, and social structure of Rome;

A.  Describe the influence of geography on, and the contributions of the Etruscans and the western Greek colonies to, the development of early Roman civilization (central location, Italian Peninsula, Alps and Mediterranean for protection from eastern powers, sea borne commerce).

B. Analyze the causes, events, and consequences of the Punic Wars 264-146 B.C. (trade competition with Carthage, Hannibal, Roman victory, destruction of Carthage, expanded trade and wealth for Rome).

C.  Describe the major phases in the territorial and cultural expansion of Rome (Punic Wars, campaigns of Caesar, Africa, Asia, Gaul, the British Isles, Hellenistic world).

Follow up: Have students fill out video guides and go over answers as a class after the video. Then have the students label the map: Rome, Carthage, Mediterranean Sea, trace the path taken and battles fought by Hannibal, Sardinia, Sicily, the size of Rome and Carthage pre and post Punic Wars (Use the book as a resource to help students accomplish this goal). If desired, have students write an essay on how one can lose many battles but still win the war- shown by the Romans during the second Punic War.
