Art of the NEAR EAST 3500-331 BC

One of the first known centers of civilization is Mesopotamia, a region between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers near present-day IRAN and Iraq.

At different times, the region was ruled by the Sumerians, Babylonians, Hittites, Assyrians, and later , the Persians. In 331bc, Alexander the Great conquered the region and united it with Greek Culture.

These ruling groups created art about their beliefs and conquests of their leaders. Some of the rulers are portrayed as animal gods. Relief and mosaic friezes tell stories of hunts, battles and ceremonies.

Ancient Egyptian Art 3000-500 BC

Ancient Egyptian civilization developed along the NILE RIVER in AFRICA.

The Egyptians believed their pharaohs were gods who would live after death. Many of the pharaohs built tombs shaped like temples or pyramids. The tombs were filled with furniture, jewelry and other things the rulers might need in the afterlife. Wall paintings, relief sculptures and small models show servants bringing gifts, harvesting crops and fishing. For nearly 2, 500 years, artists used many of the same artistic rules. Their portraits of phraohs and other important people are similar in style. The subjects are usually shown with calm expressions and poses that seem to be frozen for eternity.

Ancient Egyptian art was created using media ranging from drawings on papyrus, wood, stone, and paintings.
