A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
HONORING THE MEMORY OF ARTHUR E. HOLMAN, JR., ONE OF ANDERSON COUNTY’S ABLEST AND MOST DISTINGUISHED LEADERS AND OFFERING THE SINCERE CONDOLENCES OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA TO HIS WONDERFUL FAMILY AND COUNTLESS FRIENDS.
Whereas, the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina wishes to express their deepest sympathy and most sincere condolences to the family of Arthur E. Holman, Jr., a lifelong Anderson resident and community leader; and
Whereas, Mr. Holman, a sixth generation Andersonian, was laid to rest Monday, December 18, 2000, at the Central Presbyterian Church in Anderson. Mr. Holman is survived by his wife, the former Emma Lee Felkel; one son, A. Elliot Holman, III; one daughter, Emily Sands; a son-in-law, George L. Sands, Jr.; one grandson, George L. Sands, III, all of Anderson; and one brother, John A. Holman, of Greenwood; and
Whereas, he was educated in the Anderson public schools and was Valedictorian of the Boys High School Class of 1934. In 1938 he graduated from the University of South Carolina. He was a life member of the Board of Governors of the Educational Foundation of the University of South Carolina; and
Whereas, as a faithful member of Grace Episcopal Church, he served on the vestry as Junior Warden and Senior Warden. He was active as a lay reader and guided the church through a year without a minister. He served as a delegate to the General Convention of the Episcopal Church in Boston in 1952; and
Whereas, Mr. Holman was president of the Living Endowment for Anderson College for three years and he and his wife were awarded the Annie D. Denmark Award in 1999 for “sacrificial service to Anderson College in a manner which advanced the progress and highest aims of the college”; and
Whereas, one of Mr. Holman’s greatest loves was music, and he organized the Anderson Community Concert Association after World War II. He served as its president for ten years. He guided the Community Concert Association to become the largest music group of its kind in South Carolina with a membership of two thousand; and
Whereas, the South Caroliniana Library at the University of South Carolina has established an endowment named “Arthur Elliot Holman, Jr. Preservation and Acquisition Endowment” that enables the library to acquire and conserve material of his interest, which include the Episcopal Church, music and the arts, and the history of Anderson County and the State of South Carolina; and
Whereas, it is most befitting for the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina to pause in their deliberations to recognize the distinguished career and contributions of this prominent public servant, Arthur E. Holman, Jr. His love for Anderson County was the central vision of his life and Arthur Holman’s imprint is left firmly in his community, county, and the State of South Carolina. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, honor the memory of Arthur E. Holman, Jr., one of Anderson County’s ablest and most distinguished leaders and offer the sincere condolences of the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina to his wonderful family and countless friends.
Be it further resolved that his wife, Emma Holman, be presented with a copy of this resolution.
