In modern society, most smart phone consumers use either an Apple iPhone or Android phone. Our team generated a hypothesis that many Android smartphone consumers in the New York City Market Place would be outnumbered by the Apple iPhone Consumers. The study our team conducted determined which smartphone is used most and why. Our research objectives included the following:To determine which aspects are the most important for smartphone consumer’s purchases in the New York City Market Place. To correlate the demographic characteristics of the consumers in the New York City Market Place to their smartphone purchase decision. To examine how consumers in The New York City Market Place feel about their current smartphone company, prices, and features. Smart Phone Research Group collected data by distributing 50 questionnaires in the New York City Market Place. Each member of our team randomly distributed ten questionnaires. The questionnaires were 27 questions spread out on 14 pages. Our target respondents consisted of Males and Females ages ranging between 18 and 50+. Once all the questionnaires were completed, the team had to classify the data from the respondents in order to collect accurate results. In result, 56% of the respondents were female and 44% were male. The majority of the respondents were under the age of 20 which in total was 30% of the respondents, 28% were between the ages of 20-25, 16% were between the ages of 26-30, 18% were between the ages of 31-35, 4% were between the ages 41-45 and 4% were ages 46 and up. When these consumers were asked which smartphone they used, 46% used iPhones, 30% used Androids, and 6% used other Samsung phones. After further analyzing the data, the majority of both iPhone and Android users stated that the most relevant features of their smartphone were the battery life, durability, and price. In comparison, the least relevant aspects were the phone accessories and the influence of family and friends having the same phone. In conclusion, our team found that most smartphone users in the New York City Market Place were iPhone consumers due to battery life and durability of the phone. Our team also found that battery life was more important to consumers than price. Though we predicted that the iPhone consumers would outnumber the Android consumers, the numbers were incredibly close which the team did not predict. Problem Discovery and Definition Experience SurveyWhat kind of phone is selling more in T-Mobile?Do any of the customers ever debate to choose iPhone or Android? If so, what made them choose it?Have anyone ever come back to the store to complain about his or her phone? If so, what kind of phone and what was the problem?Did any of the customers ever asked their friends or family member to help them choose a phone?Have any of the customers ever came back to the store to return the phone? If so, what phone and what was the reason? When the new iPhone or Android release, which phone has a higher popularity? For the experience survey, we interviewed Robert Perez who works as an assistance manager at T-Mobile. Robert said that the Apple phone is sold more than the Android due to the recall of the Note 7. Many people are hesitated to purchase the Android because of the phone blowing up in their face. Many people debate over the iPhone and Android when choosing a brand-new phone. A few customers chose Android because of the open source; able to much more on the phone. Others chose iPhone because of the simplicity of the software. The battery on the Android is the main reason why people bring back the phone to the store. Robert said it is probably because the customer does not know how to use the phone properly and they over charge their phone. The majority asks their family members and friend to help them choose their phone. However, since the workers are more knowledgably of the product, the customers normally ask the employees what phone they should purchase. To have both experience of the phone, customers would change their phone to either the iPhone, if they have an Android, or the Android, if they have the iPhone. During the release date, the inventory on the iPhone is low, because of the high demand. Due to the high demand, customers would wait 2-3 months until their phone is delivered to them because of back orders. The questionnaire generated by the Smartphone Research Group contained 27 questions and was 14 pages long. A total of 50 questionnaires were answered and completed. The questionnaires were made up of a variety of specified and demographic questions in order to record the required data for the study. The answers received from the respondents were then further observed and analyzed by the team to classify the needed information. Collection of the DataCollection of the DataPre-testBefore we handed out the main study, we did a pretest. A pretest is similar to the main study, but we only hand out 5 copies to 5 individuals. The main goal was to find out if the individual had trouble understanding the questions, so we can add, reduce and critique any questions. While regulating the pre-test, we have observed that the participant was finding difficulty-answering question 12, which asked, “What kind of phone do your family/friends have?” The choices that were given was; Blackberry, Android, Samsung, IPhone, and other. Unfortunately, all 5 participants asked the same question, “What if our family and friends have more than just an IPhone, Android or Samsung?” After reviewing the question more than once, we have come to a conclusion that we have to put the 3 most popular brands, which was IPhone, Android, and Samsung, and offer the options to list it from 1-3, 1 being the most and 3 being the least. Once we made the changes, question 12 became simple and easier to answer. On the last page of the questionnaire, we have provided a section for the participant to freely comment on any input, suggestions, or how they feel about our questionnaire. We receive a few questionnaires that said that we should add more factors in question 17, since it was too short. We just added a few more factors and the respondents were satisfied. Main StudyAfter making the changes, the Main Study was more successful. The partakers understand it more clearly and were satisfy with the questions. Although the Main Study was a bit difficult, because we wanted every question to be the best it can be, we still manage to get positive reviews from our contributors. We received comments, such as, “Great questions!”, “IPhone all the way”, “Hope this help you with your study”. The overall experience was great and we were able to get great feedbacks and develop countless connection with our respondents.
