Turner’s Syndrome is a very uncommon and not fatal disease

Turner’s Syndrome is a very uncommon and not fatal disease. It is so uncommon that is occurs 1 out of 3,000 new born girls. If a mother had a baby that was unaffected by the syndrome, the baby still could have disease or the baby could be a carrier. The disease is a sex-linked trait because it only occurs in girls, but it affects all races from nationalities and regions of the world equally. Turner’s Syndrome is a disorder of the chromosomes in which one of the two sex chromosomes is partially or completely absent. When a grown person has Turner’s Syndrome, they usually don’t reach a height of 5 feet. The average height is 4 feet, 7 inches. They also my have the following: Cross-eyes, webbed neck, low hairline on the back of neck, lack of ovaries, which results in infertility, and possible retardation. In some cases, they lack sex hormones in which results in not having menstrual periods, and their breasts remain undeveloped.

The diagnosis of Turner’s Syndrome is by studying the chromosomes. In some cases, when part of the X chromosomes is missing the Y-chromosomes fill in. That means that the patient’s has a high risk of developing a tumor.

I bet you’re wondering if Tuner’s Syndrome is hereditary. Turner’s Syndrome is genetic because is involves the loss or abnormal expression if X-chromosomes genes, but is does not mean that it “runs in the family”. To that saying, there is only one exception, that families with a X-chromosome deletion which is stable enough to be passed down through the generations and which allows fertility. If a girl does become pregnant and passes on her normal X-chromosome to her offspring, no continuation of the syndrome is expected.

Right as of now there has been no available treatment for Turner’s Syndrome. However, girls are sometimes treated with growth hormones which can help them reach a more normal height. The ovaries are normally responsible for producing the female hormone estrogen and replacement estrogen therapy is available.
