Geometry Syllabus – 4th F202

The course is designed to teach you the mathematical concepts and skills that will help you succeed in life and provide you with foundations for your pursuits after high school. Geometry is the second year in a four-year sequence of rigorous, standards-based mathematics courses. Three credits of math are required for high school graduation which is an equivalent of 3 high school math classes. You should have already complete Algebra I and earned 1 math credit. You must pass this class to be on track for graduation and to move on to Algebra II.

Mrs. Prewitt will be leaving on maternity leave during the 1st semester. Ms. Regan will be in the classroom with the students from the beginning of the year and take over once Mrs. Prewitt leaves. We are both committed to your success in this class and are excited for an amazing year!

Materials: All students must be prepared for class each day. Required supplies include pencils, paper, binder, calculator, and Geometry Practice Workbook.

• Textbook: The textbook we will use is Geometry published by McDougal Littell. Textbooks can be accessed online –The math department is encouraging students to use the online textbook, rather than check-out a textbook, so that we can have textbooks available for students in the classroom and so that students do not need to be responsible for a textbook. Students are still welcome to check-out a textbook and just need to communicate that they want one to the teacher. There is an approximate $85 replacement fee for lost textbooks.

o Textbook check out is upon request by the student.

******During advisory or after school

o Online textbook is available at the website below. Before accessing the e-Text, each student is required to set up a “Student Account” with the activation code.

Product Name: Geometry - eEdition  (2007 edition)

ACTIVATION CODE: 8883661-20

ISBN #: 9780618756476

• Practice Workbook: We require a Practice Workbook titled Geometry, which is aligned with our textbook. Students will be given one free copy of the workbook in class. If the workbook is lost, another workbook must be purchased at the main office. Checks can be made payable to Edmonds School District (ESD), not to the high school. The office will also accept cash. The workbook is $4.00.

• 3-Ring Binder: Additionally a 3-ring binder is required. Notes and homework will be kept in this binder.

• Lined Paper and Graph Paper: Loose-leaf lined paper and graph paper will be used for taking notes and completing homework and classwork assignments on.

• Calculator: The TI-83 or TI-84 is strongly recommended and available at most office supply or electronic stores. Our classroom is equipped with a limited number graphing calculators that will be available for in-class use only. Students are highly encouraged to purchase their own graphing calculator as we do NOT have enough for all students when testing or quizzing. Using cell phones and iPods as calculators will not be allowed.

• Pencils & Eraser: no pens, mistakes are a natural part of learning and are bound to happen ( Work done in ink will not be accepted.

• Scissors

• Protractor (Recommended) & Compass (Recommended)

Grading: Your grade will be based on classwork, homework, and assessments. Final grades are based on the following percentages. Grades are meant to represent the student’s achievement according to the state standards (not effort or behavior). If you finish the end of a semester with a grade with 0.5% of the next higher grade, you will be considered for having your grade rounded up, but this is at teacher discretion and not automatic. Things that will be considered are effort, attendance, work completion, participation and responsibility.

|A |93.%-100% |B- |80%-82.99% |D+ |67%-69.99% |

|A- |90%-92.99% |C+ |77%-79.99% |D |60%-66.99% |

Grades are meant to represent the student’s achievement according to the state standards (not effort or behavior).

Classwork/Homework (0% of Grade)

Classwork/homework assignments from the textbook, workbook, and worksheets will be recorded for completeness. These will be recorded out of 2 points and will be based on accuracy and completeness. 2 points will be awarded for assignments that are fully completed on time. 1 point will be awarded for late assignments. Missing and incomplete assignments will be marked as a 0 in the gradebook. Most assignments will be started in class and must be finished outside of class before the start of the next class day. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to determine the assignment that was missed and to complete that assignment. This will be graded for accuracy and will be the make up for missing the homework quiz. (A list of all assignments can be found on my website on the “Homework Calendar” page.) Any assignments not turned in will result in a zero until that assignment is submitted. Students have until the unit test to submit late work.

Homework Quizzes (20% of Grade)

Homework Quizzes will be given nearly every day within the first 5 minutes of the start of class. These quizzes will be one to five questions based on the classwork/homework from the previous class day, and will range from 1 - 6 points. Daily quizzes will be graded on a scale of being correct or incorrect – full or no credit.

If you are absent, missing classwork is made up by copying the missed notes (found on my website) and turning in the homework assignment for that day (this will be the make up for the missed homework quiz).

Assessments (80% of Grade)

Each unit will include several quizzes and a unit test. We will also have a final exam at the end of each semester. Anticipate that no notes will be allowed on any of these assessments. All tests will be announced ahead of time, and quizzes may or may not be announced ahead of time.

Retakes: Quiz retakes will be offered based on my discretion and will be allowed given the following specifications…

• Students must make corrections on their quiz on a separate sheet of paper.

• Students must come in after school to work with me for at least 30min on the quiz that is being retaken.

• Retakes must occur on a separate day than noted above, and must be done within 1 week of the quiz being returned.

• The score from the retake quiz will replace the old score regardless if the score is higher or lower than the original.

Late/Absent Work: Late work: will be accepted until the Unit test, no unit work will be accepted after the Unit test. Excused Absence: assignments must be made up within 10 school days of returning. It is the responsibility of the student to schedule any assessment he/she missed within 2 weeks of absence. After 2 weeks, 20% will be deducted from the assessment score. These assignments will be given a zero until completed.

Unexcused absences: will result in a 0 for that assignment or assessment. DO NOT skip class.

Extra Credit: no extra credit will be given, although additional opportunities to demonstrate increased understanding of standards may be accepted upon request of student at least two weeks prior to semester final.

The Smatter Balance Assessment (SBA) will be administered in June of the student’s junior year. Passing this exam is a requirement for students to graduate high school. This exam will include concepts from Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2. Thus, it is important for students to pass Algebra 1 as soon as possible so that Geometry and Algebra 2 courses can be completed by the end of their junior year.

Classroom Rules and Expectations:

Be Involved:

• Come prepared and on time to class.

• Participate in activities and discussions.

• Leaving the classroom for any non-emergency or non-pre-arranged reasons will not be permitted. This includes use of the bathroom during class time.

• Seek additional help during advisory and/or after school.

Be Respectful:

• Listen with your mouth closed and eyes on the person speaking.

• Raise your hand if you would like to speak and then wait for permission to speak to allow for everyone to hear what it is that you want to say.

• Smart phones, tablets, and laptops can be used as a learning device for certain activities in our classroom, but it is crucial that these electronic devices be used as intended for the lesson. Thus, phones can still be taken until the end of the period if they are being used improperly.

Failure to follow classroom rules and expectations will lead to disciplinary actions. First offense = verbal warning, second offense = a new placement of the student in the classroom, third offense = sent out into the hall for 5 minutes and a call to the parents/guardians, fourth offense = removal from class for remainder of class time, detention and parent/teacher conference. Be aware that a student can go from 1st offense to 4th offense in one class period.

Academic Honesty: All work should be your own unless appropriately credited. Copying from other students, books, people, or the Internet will result in a grade of zero for all individuals involved. This includes homework. Multiple instances of academic dishonesty may result in a loss of credit for the course. Please refer to the academic honesty policy in the student planner.

Tardy Policy: It is a big disruption when students arrive late to class. If students arrive after the homework quiz begins they will have to complete the quiz during advisory or after school. If you are late without a pass from another teacher you will be marked tardy. If a student is more than 10 minutes late, school policy states that the student must be marked absent. Nonetheless, even if a student is more than 10 minutes late, it is still important to show up for class to learn the material covered that day. If tardiness becomes a problem, a parent will be contacted. Continued tardiness will be referred to the Dean of Students. Please refer to the tardy policy in the student planner.

Attendance Policy: Students are expected to be on time and in class EVERY DAY. The majority of learning in this class will occur during class participation and discussion. Absences, excused or unexcused, will affect a student’s progress in the class. For this reason, students are expected to be in class whenever reasonably possible. If you are sick, please be mindful of your own health and that of your peers, and use proper judgment. As stated several times earlier, students are responsible for finding out what they missed and making up all work when absent. Please refer to the attendance policy in the student planner.
