Week of the Young Child Activities

April 20-24, 2020

The Week of the Young Child is celebrated for one week to spot light young children and their families with hands-on activities encouraging movement and healthy lifestyles through music, food and art. This year theme is “Celebrating our Youngest Leaders”.

Below you will find some suggested activities to engage families for the week. Please send videos and/or pictures of activities for the week to your local center. Use the caption

All About Me Poster

|Music Monday (April 20, 2020) |

|Additional Suggestion for Activities: |

|Create/Make up a family dance and video it and share the video with caption and/or hashtag or Tik Tok |

|Make up and record your own unique version of a song or write your own and sing/dance to it. |

|Parent/Child can create a rap/chant or poem about learning through play. |

|Dancing with a twist: Create a dance routine or dance interpretation using the child’s favorite nursery rhyme. |

| |

|Early Head Start: |

|Dip your tot’s feet in a small amount of paint, and allow child to stamp, stomp and step on paper to make footprints while singing or listening to their favorite |

|song. |

|Create an instrument by placing rice or beans in an empty plastic container, or tissue/paper towel roll secure the top or the ends of the rolls by gluing it down and |

|allow the baby to shake it. Video your child using the instrument and send it to their caregiver. If you have access to you tube, search the song, Walking Song and |

|follow the song as the lyric changes. |

|Sing your child favorite Nursery Rhyme in changing the lyrics. Make it fun.   |

|Additional Suggestion for Activities: |

|Healthy Kid Spring Mix: take pictures/video of children making a healthy snack Trail Mix (variety of cereal, nuts and raisins to place in a bag and shake it). |

|Allow the children to measure the ingredients while making the snacks. |

|Early Head Start: |

|Circus Train: Wash your hands. Put a pat of icing on the vanilla wafer. Stand the animal cookie up on the icing. Allow toddlers to help as much as possible, such |

|as, putting the icing on the vanilla wafer and standing the animal cookie up on the icing. Repeat to make a short train or a long train. |

|Create a fruit pizza with your child.  |

|Read the story “Green Eggs and Ham” to you child then make it for breakfast and discuss the book as you eat together.  |

|When children build together, they explore math and science concepts and develop their social and early literacy skills. |

|Expression Mural: Paint or draw pictures depicting feelings. |

|Hand Washing: Create/Make a creative version of a hand washing poster following the steps of hand washing; video the family members washing hands and |

|singing/counting. |

|Create pictures of their interpretation of “Social Distance”; what it means to be Healthy and Safe! |

|Early Head Start: |

|Assist children with stringing cereal, such as fruit loops, to make a colorful necklace or bracelet that may be worn and eaten! |

|Use bowls from the kitchen for stacking. Stack and discuss size differences/ count as you and your child stack.  |

|Place a clothes basket in the middle of the floor, after matching socks, take turn tossing socks in the basket.  |

|Painting with a Twist: Paint while sipping on their choice of fruit juices, milk and/or water. |

|T-Shirt Art: Create and decorative shirt using the theme “Learning through Play”. |

|Face Mask: Create and decorative a face mask for family members. |

|Sharing family stories |

|Engaging and celebrating families is at the heart of supporting our youngest learners. NAEYC applauds family members’ role as young children’s first and most |

|important teachers.  Share pictures and stories about your family as we celebrate the unique role families play in their children's learning and development. |

|TRY THIS: Prepare a Family Friday breakfast, where children can prepare and share breakfast treats with their families! |

|Family Style Meal: Cook your family favorite Meal. Allow the children to help set the table, and fill the bowls with food to sit on the table.  |

| |

|Family Quilt: Draw or paint a picture of different family members. The sheets will be collected and tied together with yarn or string to make a quilt. |

|Classroom Family Tree: Create a tree using a variety of art supplies. The tree can be used to place photographs of family members, family events and memories, etc. |

|Family Fun Day: Engage in a variety of learning games and activities. Sing songs, recite poems and dance routines, Tik Tok, etc. |

|Skits and Books: Read child favorite children’s book.  They will dress up, use props, and act out the story.  |

|Plan a fun day for outdoor play time. You may include bubbles, music, and other learning activities. |
