VICTORIA UNIVERSITY

ANIMAL EXPERIMENTATION ETHICS COMMITTEE

STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND REQUIREMENTS FOR

CHAIR, VICTORIA UNIVERSITY ANIMAL EXPERIMENTATION ETHICS COMMITTEE

The Victoria University Animal Experimentation Ethics Committee (AEEC) is a sub-committee of the University’s Research Committee (RC). The Chair of the AEEC is responsible for the management and supervision of the activities and responsibilities of the AEEC. Administrative support is provided through the Office for Research.

1. Duties

▪ Ensure that the AEEC operates in accordance with the principles and requirements of the Code; the relevant policies of the institution and AEEC procedures;

▪ Ensure that proposals are considered by the AEEC and the outcomes conveyed to investigators and teachers in a timely manner;

▪ Advise institutional management regarding the level of resourcing required by the AEEC and advice to the Research Committee on issues relating to animal research ethics;

▪ Represent the AEEC in any negotiations with management;

▪ Oversee all requirements of the AEEC to report and review its operation, as outlined in the Code;

▪ Ensure AEEC records are maintained and made available for review by the institution and authorised external reviewers.

▪ Provide leadership in relation to animal research ethics for the University;

▪ Chair meetings of the AEEC (normally 6 meetings per year);

▪ Actively support the monitoring of animal research within the University

▪ Represent the University at fora and in public debate in relation to animal research ethics.

2. Selection Criteria

Essential

▪ Good working knowledge and understanding of the ethical principles that are applied to experimentation involving animals or the capacity to rapidly acquire such knowledge and understanding.

▪ Knowledge of government legislation and guidelines relating to animal research experimentation and ethics or the capacity to rapidly acquire such knowledge and understanding.

▪ Demonstrated experience as Chair of a University or Faculty Committee or as a member of an academic/administrative Unit dealing with complex issues.

Desirable

▪ Ability to negotiate high quality outcomes in potentially adversarial situations

▪ Senior management or academic position within the University.
