JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title : Animal Health & Welfare Consultant

Salary : circa £30,000 per annum

Hours : 35 hours per week plus

Responsible to : Chief Executive

POSITION SUMMARY:

Cinnamon Trust volunteers help elderly and terminally ill owners all over the UK with all the day-to-day pet care that they are unable to provide due to frailty and illness. Volunteers also foster pets in their own homes on a short term basis when owners face a spell in hospital. The Trust takes on lifelong care of bereaved pets and supports all lifelong fosters by paying for their veterinary care and with general help and advice.

This position would suit an enthusiastic, pro-active qualified veterinary nurse preferably with knowledge of, and training in the use of, alternative therapies.

THE PURPOSE OF THIS JOB:

Is to give advice to fosterers regarding the health and welfare of the animals, to promote the use of alternative remedies (homeopathy, herbal, nutritional, acupuncture etc.) which are kinder and often more effective for chronic conditions such as arthritis, to approve veterinary procedures (or not) before they are implemented and to generally support and advise fosterers nursing a poorly pet.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

i. To approve all veterinary expenditure in line with The Trust’s protocols.

ii. To advise regarding the use of alternative therapies in place of, or along with, conventional medicine.

iii. To advise regarding a fresh food diet appropriate to the needs of each pet as required.

iv. To advise and support fosterers when any health and welfare concerns arise.

v. To follow up on pets receiving veterinary treatment and advise on nursing and recovery as necessary.

vi. To ensure vets around the UK comply with our protocols when treating our lifelong foster pets and liaise with them during treatment.

vii. Check that invoices submitted by vets have been authorised according to The Trust’s protocols.

viii. Delivering case reports or updates to the Chief Executive

ix. Ordering and maintaining stocks of supplements and other supplies

x. To assist fosterers and volunteer co-ordinators with advice and support when medical emergencies arise out of hours and are called in to our 24 hour emergency service.

xi. To liaise with all other staff of The Trust in a flexible manner.

xii. To be familiar with and adhere to the ethos of The Cinnamon Trust at all times.

xiii. At all times to ensure and maintain a compassionate, professional and efficient public image for The Trust.

Together with such additional general duties as the Employer shall reasonably require, having regard to the needs of the Employer’s business as a Charitable Trust.
