Model thinking of six animals and give each a name. Stress how you start each name with a neatly formed capital letter. Finish by writing a sentence without capital letters; what trouble will suzy the cat cause? Model re-reading and correcting.Children then do Task 1 (one day of work)Task 1: Children think of six animals they like. They give a name to each animal, writing all of them with an initial capital letter. They then read an extract from There’s a Lion in My Cornflakes that has no capital letters. They say where they should be and check with a corrected version of the text.Main teaching – lesson 2Explain their writing project to children – to write a new version of Dog Eat Dog using each of the days of the week in sequence. Re-read the story, then model the process for Days 2 to 4. Let children see you write an initial sentence: On Monday Suzie the cat knocked over a vase. Emphasise capital letters for sentence start, animal names and days of the week. Repeat for Tuesday, this time using adjectives and an adverb. Finish with Wednesday, showing how you use and to join ideas: The dog ate Dad’s sandwich and put mud on the carpet.Children then do Tasks 2, 3 and 4 (three days of work)Task 2: Children begin their new version of Dog Eat Dog by writing sentences recording which animal causes what upsets on Monday and Tuesday. They make sure they use capital letters correctly.Task 3: Children continue their new version of Dog Eat Dog, writing sentences for Wednesday and Thursday. They use adjectives and adverbs to describe the animals and upsets in their sentences.Task 4: Children finish their new versions of Dog Eat Dog, using the conjunction and to link ideas in sentences.
