Guide to the Animal Use Statistics ReportAnimal Welfare Act 2002, Part 2 Use of Animals for Scientific PurposesGovernment of Western Australia01 January - 31 DecemberWhat is the Animal Use Statistics Form?A condition of UWA’s licence to use animals for scientific purposes requires UWA to provide Animal Use Statistics to the State Government, each calendar year, i.e., 1 January to 31 December. This guide is prepared to assist you when completing the Animal Use Statistics Excel spreadsheet.Collecting statisticsAnimals must be counted in each project and must be included each calendar year they are in a project.Only animal use in Western Australia is to be included in the spreadsheet. If no animals used (or supplied) the tables must be returned with ‘0’s in the first line (‘Nil’ return)I only do wildlife observations (no trapping). Do I need to submit the Animal Use Statistics?Observational studies are considered ‘use’ and researchers are required to submit a statistics spreadsheet Use Procedure Code ‘1’ - Observation involving no or minor interference. If the exact number used is unknown for an observational study please provide a general indication of the numbers observed.Procedures CodeProcedure Codes are intended to give an indication of the impact of procedures on the animals used. Examples are listed below: Column 3: Procedure. See also Section 19 of the AEC application approval.Multiple animal species categories and/or procedures in a single AEC projectSome projects will have more than one animal species code (01-113). Examples are listed below in Column 4. Species Categories and some projects will have animals which are subject to different Procedure Codes. In these cases, the projects should be split into appropriate ‘sub-projects’ which each only having one species category and one procedure code and each of these ‘sub-projects’ occupy a single line of the spreadsheet. Each line should have the same AEC project number. Only count animals once per year per project. See Example Animal Use StatisticsStages of developmentThe State Government is seeking data on the use of prepartum or embryonic animals which have reached over half gestation or incubation (e.g. embryonated eggs) but have not been allowed to progress to independent viability (e.g. they are killed before they are born/hatched). Only include embryonic or foetal animals once the development has progressed beyond half the gestation or incubation period for the animal. Stages earlier than this should not be counted (e.g. do not count chicken embryos used for cell culture at 9 days of incubation (Chicken incubation is 21 days)Fish and Cephalopods (e.g. squid, octopus)The reporting of fish and cephalopods is not mandatory under the current WA legislation but it is useful.Re-use of animalsEach year, an animal should be counted once for each project in which it is used. If the project is renewed the following year, then that animal is counted once again in that subsequent year. If an animal is transferred to another project it must be counted twice - once for each project. When an animal has been re-used, this must be noted in the spreadsheet in Column 6 Comments. Production of genetically modified animalsThe production of genetically modified animals may involve a wide range of procedures, making it difficult to assign these to a particular Procedure Code. The production of genetically modified animals is animal “use”. A category has been included for these animals to permit easier collection of data. It effectively includes ALL animals used in genetically modified animal production other than the final progeny. Column 1: PROJECT NUMBEREnter your AEC approval number for: Research 100/XXXX, Teaching 200/XXX or Breeding 300/XXXColumn 2: PURPOSEEnter the most appropriate numerical code (1-9) from those listed below to describe the primary purpose of the project (one only for each project should be entered). 1Stock maintenance 2AStock Breeding (genetically modified)2BStock breeding (not genetically modified)3Education: Projects carried out to achieve educational objectives.4Research: Human or animal biology5Research: Human or animal health & welfare6Research: Animal management or production7Research: Environmental studyCOLUMN 3: PROCEDUREEnter the highest appropriate numerical code (1-9) from those listed below to describe the type of procedures carried out on the animals in the project, as indicated in the AEC approvalQ19. Kangaroo).Native Non-endemic – an animal that occurs naturally in Australia but not naturally occurring in WA (eg Koalas).Native endemic - an animal that occurs naturally in WA (eg. Numbat or Emu).Poultry – domestic fowls, such as chickens, quails, turkeys, ducks or geese that are commonly raised for meat or eggs.Exotic - an animal that has been introduced into Australia (eg foxes).Zoo animals - an animal that is being kept in a zoo. Only include animals that are used for educational purposes. Column 5:NUMBER USEDEnter the number of animals that were used / ordered / generated (from breeding) in the calendar year 1 January – 31 December. Animals must be counted in each project and must be included for each calendar year they are in a long-term project, (i.e., not the total number the AEC approved) Column 6: COMMENTSUse this column to communicate any other information, eg. use of pre-term animals / culls.Column 7:PRE-TERM (Y/N)If information is available, indicate whether the animals used in the project are pre-term using:‘Y’ for yes or leave blank for no. Column 8:SOURCEName of Source / Vendor were animals were obtained e.g. Animal Resource Centre, Peel Pork.If the animals were obtained from UWA, i.e., Animal Care Service (ACS), Ridgefield Farm, Zebra fish breeding facility, use: ‘internal’.If animals are wild caught e.g. Swan river, Abrolhos etc. use: ‘wild’.Column 9:CONCLUSION OF USE (this column is optional)This column is to contain information on provisions made for the animal at the conclusion of its use. This may include rehousing, return to natural habitat, humane killing and/or reuse. The Animal Welfare Act imposes penalties for providing false or misleading information. A licence may be suspended or revoked for providing false or misleading information.Example Animal Use Statistics1. Project No.2. Purpose3. ProcedureCode4. Species category5. Number used6. Comments7.
