Animal Habitat Diorama Project - Saint Paul School

Second Grade’s Animal Project!

Name___________________ Animal ____________________

Families,

It’s time for the 2nd graders to begin their animal project! The objective is to help students learn about animals and their habitats. There are two parts to this project

A) Diorama- that will be completed at home.

B) Written research report- which will be completed in school.

A) Diorama: (Due Tuesday, January 30)

Students will create “3 dimensional miniature scene” using a shoebox (or other small box) showing their chosen animal in its environment. Families are encouraged to help the students in the making of their diorama. Working side by side with them will help them better understand their finished project. Students may use a variety of materials to create their dioramas. Examples are construction paper, pictures, crayons, markers, cotton balls etc. Their animal can be made using different materials such as: drawing a picture, pictures from the computer, a plastic toy, or mold one from clay.

Be creative and have fun!

DIORAMA REQUIREMENTS:

• The diorama must be no larger than 12” x 15”; the size of an average shoebox

• Your assigned animal needs to be clearly displayed in its natural habitat

• Both the inside and outside surfaces of box should be painted, colored, and/or decorated.

• Label diorama with student’s name, and the name of animal.

The animal diorama project is due Tuesday, January 30th. The students will share their diorama with the class and tell what they’ve learned about their animals. The students will also answer questions about how their diorama was made, such as telling the materials they used, why they chose the materials, and who worked with them to make their diorama. Presentations will take place 1/31 and 2/1. A science test grade will be given for this project.

B) written report-Completed in School

Students will complete the animal report in school using the research process. The students will use books, articles, and computers to research their animals. Using their research the students will complete a report which will be published in a classroom book. Each student will receive a copy of this book. This project will be the science test grade for chapters 4 and 5. A language arts quiz grade will be given for the written report.
