MCDONALD, James Kelvin The death is announced (5 April 2003) of James Kelvin McDonald (76) of Rockland (Ottawa), and previously for forty years of Kingston and Hartington. For 37 years a professor in the Spanish and Italian department at Queen's University, he was a committed internationalist. This passion was particularly appreciated by later generations of students through his devotion to La Casa, an on-campus house for undergraduate and graduate students in Spanish. Although he was active formany years in the NDP, his single greatest significant achievement was his chairmanship in the 1960s of the Grand Campaign, a successful but by no mean easy fund-raising drive to save The Grand Theatre from destruction. Subsequent generations of Kingston area talent, as well as a host of international stars who have since played The Grand, have every reason to celebrate the achievement of James McDonald and the large committee of concerned citizens he mustered and led. James is remembered and celebrated by his loving wife Luella, and by his six children and their families: son Tam and his partner, Bernice Kaplan, of London England; son Piers and his wife Ofelia, grandson Ewan and granddaughters Lara and Vanessa, of the Yukon; daughter Megan and her husband Brent Slobodin, and grandsons Conal and Kieran, of the Yukon; daughter Moira and her partner Andrew Snow, of Ottawa; and daughter Jane and son Simon, both of Ottawa. A public Memorial Service will be held at the Morgan Memorial Chapel at the Theological College at Queen's University, at 2 p.m. on Friday April 11. Flowers can be sent ahead of time to the chapel, or donations made to the Grand Restoration Project, 218 Princess Street, K7L 1B2. Messages of condolence can be addressed to the website of the Ottawa funeral home, (), where cremation has already taken place. James McDonald's ashes will rest in Cataraqui Cemetery, where a private family service will be held. Further private remembrances will be held on the land he loved for more than a quarter of a century in Hartington; in West Vancouver, where he grew up; and in the ancient home of his fathers, on the Isle of Skye

Mildred Wallace (Milly Kehoe) October 1, 1933 - February 22, 2003 A courageous, loving, unselfish wife and mother right up to her last moment entered into rest at K.G.H. after a lengthy battle for a quality of life, denied her at 69 years of age. Milly was born at Hinchinbrook to parents William and Marion (Ruttan) Kehoe, the third eldest of five brothers and sisters. She attended Hill Public School and Sydenham High. Milly worked at Camp Oconto, Joe Vinkles (Sharbot Lake) and Kingston General Hospital. In 1952 Milly married Howard Wallace and moved to Halifax where he was stationed with the Navy. Their son Rodney was born in Halifax, followed by Sharon 14 months later after a transfer to Ottawa. As a result of illness the family moved to Kingston where Milly was left with the responsibility of raising their two children while Howard spent a year in Ongwanada Hospital recovering from T.B. and lung surgery 1959 - 60. While living in Cataraqui, Milly made many friends while active in home and school, Cubs and Scouts, baseball and the United Church. Another of Milly's attributes was the burden of running the family motel business for seven years while Howard worked. After 50 years of marriage Milly leaves husband Howard, son Rodney (Janet) Wallace, daughter Sharon (Bill) Lansdell and five grandchildren, Matthew, Katie and Carrie Wallace and Kelly and Casey Lansdell who will carry the torch of love that Grandma lit and left burning. Milly's toe tapping and hand clapping will be missed wherever a band is playing. Thanks from the family goes out to all the doctors and nurses in the I.C.U. at K.G.H., Lindsay Funeral Home; Rev. Elaine Smith for hospital visits and officiating at the funeral service; pallbearers, son-in-law BillLansdell, nephews Art Burgess, Ted Simonds, David Hodgson, Doug Hodgson and Paul Bourget. Special thanks to granddaughter Casey Lansdell for her professionalism with the CD player and her selection and reading of the poem Mama's Hands; to the band 40West who travelled from Ottawa, Madoc and Trenton to celebrate Milly's life with more of her favourite songs; to all the relatives, friends and neighbours for their donations, flowers, food, cards of sympathy, moral support and to the U.C.W. of St.Paul's Harrowsmith for the wonderful lunch following the interment at Harrowsmith Cemetery on February 26, 2003. -Howard Wallace and family.

PIRT, Betty Mary (nee Watts) March 24, 1925 - March 29, 2003 It is with great sorrow, we announce the sudden departure of our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Left to celebrate her life, although missing her dearly, are Betty's best friend and devoted husband of over 53 years Ken; daughters Debby (Bryan), Barb (Tim), Bev (Jeff); son, David (Bonny); grandchildren, Rob (Dawna), Chris, Julie, Aaron and great grandchildren, Brooke and Taylor. Betty was predeceased by her father, mother and brother, all of Kingston, Ontario. Born and raised in Kingston, Betty's young war years revolved around her love of the Girl Guides and the fun of being part of the Frontenac Tile office staff, until in 1945 she met the love of her life, Ken. Once their lives became one, her prime interest in life became her family and adapting to their many relocations as an Armed Forces family, finally settling in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba. After the children had all left the nest, she decided to return to the workforce, retiring as manager of the local Sears store. Following retirement, Betty became actively involved in the Portage District General Hospital Auxiliary, volunteering weekly at the hospital gift shop but never missed an opportunity to travel with Ken to the numerous military reunions to visit with their many friends established throughout the years. All through her life, Betty maintained a strong Anglican faith. This helped give her the strength to deal with Life's many ups and downs, especially bravely coping with her recent challenges of bypass surgery and declining health. Through it all, she maintained a positive outlook for future adventures. Betty's life was her family and many friends; she will be sadly missed by all. A memorial service was held 11:0-0 a.m. Wednesday 02 April at the Omega Funeral Home, Portage La Prairie - followed by a memorial service 3:00 p.m. at the St. John's Anglican Church, Carman MB. Interment to be at a later date.
