SYNOVIAL JOINT RESEARCH PROJECT

SYNOVIAL JOINT RESEARCH PROJECT

The components of synovial joints are connected in an intricate and highly functional design. This exercise will help you to increase your understanding of the intricacies of a synovial joint by requiring you to design one of your own.

PART A: CONSTRUCTING A MODEL OF A SYNOVIAL JOINT (thinking & inquiry)

Possible areas of study: hip injuries, shoulder injuries, elbow injuries, knee injuries, ankle injuries, wrist injuries.

Label the bones, bone landmarks, the muscles, the tendons, ligaments and cartilage that surround the joint.

Use the table below to outline the components needed to construct a movable joint of your choice. Remember, the joint must be able to articulate.

PART B: Write-Up (communication)

Your write-up should include the following information:

HOW YOU MADE YOUR MODEL

What materials were used and why.

CAUSES OF INJURY TO YOUR JOINT

Nature and description of the injury. Describe in detail what this injury is and what the nature of it is (what has gone wrong physiologically). What specific activities or movements or sports or behaviours cause this injury?

If there are a number of sports that cause the same or similar types of injury describe them and why this might be the case.

TREATMENT AND RECOVERY

What are the known treatments (quick fix) and or rehabilitation (long term) for this injury. Be specific. How long are these treatments? And what are some of the rates of recovery? Are the rates of recovery dependant on any other factors?

PREVENTION

What are some prevention strategies for the onset of this injury? Be specific and describe a few different people’s strategies.

REFERENCE

Include references throughout the write-up as well as a works cited sheet.
