ARTIST'S BRIEF ? ANNE HATHAWAY'S COTTAGE

Anne Hathaway's Cottage is a property of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust (SBT).

It is a grade 1 listed Tudor farmhouse of international cultural and historical significance, where William Shakespeare's wife was born and spent her formative years. Situated in the village of Shottery, approximately 1 mile (1.6 km) west of the town of Stratford-upon-Avon in Warwickshire, the property is open to the public daily and welcomes approximately 145,000 visitors a year on site.

The house and its setting has served as an inspiration to artists over generations, due to its connection to William Shakespeare and its iconic status as representing the `perfect' English thatched cottage and cottage garden.

In 2018 the SBT became a National Portfolio Organisation (NPO) through the lottery-funded Arts Council England.

THE PROJECT

In 2020, we will create a temporary gallery and studio in our outdoor spaces at Anne Hathaway's Cottage.

A series of robust, weather-proof frames will be installed throughout the site, and we will invite a number of artists (working specifically in two dimensions) to share their skills and insights with visitors to Anne Hathaway's Cottage, and work with them to interpret and visualise this unique and inspirational place through the themes of Shakespeare's work, life and times, and of the site's history, setting and `Spirit of Place'.

We are looking for up to 7 artists to receive a free pass to the site for 2020, and a ?200 micro-commission fee. Each artist is invited to spend time at the site during its opening hours, and will create and submit a minimum of 1 original (2D format, A3 size) artwork for temporary exhibition in the gallery frames. The date for the submission of the work/s and duration of the time it is exhibited will be agreed with each artist.

Please include the reference `Artist Pass' in the subject line.

Interested artists should send a letter of application, to include a link of up to 5 images of their previous work, outlining their practise and interest in this opportunity. This opportunity is open to all practising artists, from hobbyists to professionals. We are just looking for people who would like to spend time with us and create new work inspired by Anne Hathaway's Cottage and gardens.

Successful artists will receive a free pass to Anne Hathaway's Cottage for the duration of 2020 and a ?200 fee.
