ADAM YODER..."moved to Tennessee and all traces of him were lost...."

Adam Yoder was the youngest son of Conrad Yoder, founder of the North Carolina branch

of the Yoder family. In the History of the Yoder Family in North Carolina by Fred R. Yoder (whose

obituary appears elsewhere in this issue), Adam's birthdate is reported from Bible records to have

been June 23, 1785. Family tradition states that Adam moved to Tennessee and "all traces of him were

lost". After several years of gathering and trying to decipher clues, we set out in this article to piece

together what appears to have become of him and his family. We'd like to emphaize that what is

painted here seems a very likely picture, but one which is largely constructed by inference.

The 1820 North Carolina census shows Adam Yoder and his family living in Haywood

County, North Carolina. Haywood is west of the Yoder settlement in Catawba County, and closer to

the border with Tennessee. In the 1830 census, Adam is not listed in North Carolina, nor is he found

in any of the adjoining counties.

Col. George Yoder, Civil War veteran and historian of the North Carolina Yoder family,

reported that Adam had married a Sallie Davis. Buford Yother of LaFayette GA has found a reference

to a Daniel Yother who married an Elender Davis on Feb. 24, 1807 in "Marriage Bonds of Tyron

and Lincoln Counties NC". Conrad did have a son named Daniel, but he was married to Elizabeth

Cline well before that date. Could this record have referred to Adam?

Unidentified Yoders appear in northern Georgia beginning with the 1840 census. In Lumpkin

County, a John, Ephraim and an Adam are shown. In Gilmer County, there is a David Yeoder. A

George Yother is listed in Hall County. The Adam is too young to have been Conrad's son. With

David Yeoder, an aged male (70 to 80 years old) is recorded, but he is too old to have been Adam (he

may have been a father-in-law?).

The 1850 census is the first one in which the format provides for listing information about

each member of the family. It shows a David, George, Jefferson, Jason, and Ephraim Yother in

Gilmer County, and a John and "Edmund" (called "Adam" in the 1870 census) in Lumpkin County,

also with the last name spelled Yother. The "Yother" spelling is not without precedence in the North

Carolina line. In addition to the 1807 marriage record, in the first U.S. census of the 1790 (taken after

Conrad had died) the widow "Catherine Yother" is listed as head of the family.

The first generation male Yother/Yoder line of Georgia is shown on the chart included with

this article. The data displayed in the chart is based census information and assorted records to include

some gathered from current day descendants of these lines. An interesting picture emerges. We know

that Conrad's son Adam was still in NC as of 1820. We also know that he reportedly "moved to

Tennessee" at some time. The older males in this outline were all born in North Carolina between

about 1807 and 1822. The youngest of these from the 1850 census, Jason, was born about 1827 in

Tennessee. This matches the pattern of migration for Adam. No other Yoder/Yother branch is known

to have been in NC at the appropriate time. The oldest male's birth is consistent with the Yother/Davis

marriage date. (Note: According to Janet Gibson of Atlanta GA, one granddaughter of John D.

Yother told of hearing that the family name was once spelled "Yoder").

The Tennessee census records don't show any Yoders/ and Yothers in either 1830 or 1840.

The only Yoder in the 1850 census for that state is a son of one of Adam's brothers.

Several pre-1840 references appear for members of this apparent family in Georgia. During the

Florida War of 1836-7, an Ephraim Yoder served with the Mounted Volunteers, Nelson's Battalion

from Georgia. In the War of 1837-8, Adam, Ephraim and John Yoder served Company C of the

Georgia Mounted Volunteers. Early marriage records for Lumpkin County report that on Aug.

1,1838, Ephraim Yother married Susan Mathews, and on Nov. 22, 1839, John Yother married Anna

Blackstock. A later census record for John D. Yother reports that both his father and mother were

born in North Carolina, a fact which corresponds with Adam and Sallie Yoder.

Although we have no information at this point to confirm that Adam, son of Conrad, was the father

of any of these Georgia Yothers, it would certainly seem very possible based on the clues assembled

to this point. We welcome any information or hints our readers may have to offer which could help

prove or disprove this specuation!

Z ION LUTHERAN CHURCH RECORDS

ON EARLY NORTH CAROLINA YODER BIRTHS

Thanks to H . A. Yoder of Charlotte , N . C., we are able to share the following

information on early Yoder births. These records are from the Zion Lutheran Church near

Hickory, N.C. and were published in Catawba Cousins.

"Daniel Yoder and his wife Elizabetha a daughter Saloma, born 14 May 1809 baptized (no date).

Sponsor Utilla Yoder.

"Adam Yoder and his wife Sally a son John George born 9 July 1811.

"Daniel Yoder and his wife Elizabeth a son Daniel born 27 July 1811.

"Elias Yoder and his wife Utilla a son Simeon Jonas born 2 l September 1812 .

"Adam Yoder and his wife Sally a son Adam born 12 December 1813. "

As with all bits and pieces of the Yoder genealogical jigsaw puzzle, these items need to be

evaluated in light of facts known or points speculated. From these few dates, there are several

items worth bringing to the attention of students of this line.

First, regarding Adam Yoder . . . the " lost" son of Conrad... In YNL #11, beginning on

page l, an analysis was presented of the data then at hand regarding Adam and of the plausible

connection with the subsequent Yother records in Georgia and points West.

These church records cite two sons for Adam and his wife Sally (Davis). The son John

George (b. 7/9/1811) roughly corresponds to the George Yother (b.c 1809) shown on the Georgia

Yother chart (page 6, YNL 11). The son Adam (b. 12/12/1813) roughly corresponds to the Adam

Yother (aka Edmund) from that chart. While certainly not a proof, these birth records further

support the Adam Yoder/Georgia Yother speculations.

For Daniel and Elias, both early immigrants to southern Indiana, a full family record has

only recently be located for Elias (thanks to Mr. Lula Vaughn, Bunker Hill, IL --- see YNL #l0

page 7). The above record for son "Simeon Jonas" , "born 21 September 1812" is off by a few

days from the family record obtained by Mrs. Vaughn (Sept.18,1812).

For Daniel, the 1820 Indiana Census gives sex and approximate dates of birth for seven

children. No listing of these children has come to light, although with further study, it may be

possible to present some analysis in a future YNL. For now, it is sufficient to say that the record of

Bartholomew Co., IN show a marriage for an otherwise unlinked "Sally Yoder" on 22 Nov. 1825

to one Labein Banister. Was this Daniel's daughter Saloma (b.5/14/1809) who was sponsored by

"Utilla Yoder" (Elias' wife.. Utilla Hahn)? The 1820 census showed three male children born

1810-1820... was Daniel (Jr.?) one of them?

SUPPORT FOR ADAM YODER-YOTHER LINK

-------In 1988 (YNL11), we presented our speculations on what

became of Adam Yoder, youngest son of NC immigrant Conrad

Yoder. Family tradition was that he "moved to Tennessee and all

traces of him were lost". Census records show him only once, in

Haywood County, NC near the TN border. We constructed a variety

of bits and pieces which hint that the "Yother" family of GA were his

descendants. Haywood Co. marriage records show "Yoder, David m.

05 Apr 1826 Guilliams, Fanney". This matches the age and name of

the apparent oldest male of the Georgia Yother line.

************************************************************

That is interesting!

This confirms that there was a movement pattern of sorts between theses

locations and is another clue that perhaps the family of Adam Yoder did

shift around in this manner.

- - - -

Chris,

One of my other families, the Fauls/Falls family of

Scotch-Irish origin, had a member who moved from the southern part of old

Lincoln County to Haywood County, NC before 1812, and then moved to

Gilmer Co., GA before 1840. Perhaps this was a typical migration

pattern.--Agnes Alby alby6@

- - - - - - - - -

I don't know a thing about the Yother/Yoder family, but I strongly suspect

they came to Gilmer Co from Lincoln Co, NC, where they were associated with

another family who came to Giilmer -- the Whitener family. I'm relying

strictly on memory but I believe the Whitener and Yoder families may have

come together or about the same time from PA to NC.

Jeanette Royston

The Whitener who appears to have led the group to Gilmer County was dear old

John D. Wilfong Whitener, oldest son of Daniel. If you do have Anne's book,

then you know he was married three times -- and had total of 22 children.

I'm descended from him twice -- via first and third marriages. The oldest

record I found for John (and this matches what Anne said) was a deed dated

1839 ... and he was in the 1840 census.

I've never had the time to go digging through the old Gilmer tax records --

I was talking with the Tax Commissioner a week or so ago; he told me

something about the old records but I don't remember what he said. I hope

to get back to courthouse up there in next couple of weeks so will ask him.

Of course, the old deeds are at the courthouse but one must do their own

searching ... County does not have resources to do searches for people. But

there was something in local paper recently about the Clerk's office copying

a lot of old records to make finding things easier -- again I will have to

ask what that was all about!I

(From Joy Stone-Jun 2000- This information is from my grandfather,

who wrote this down in a family book in the 1940’s. I can not say

whether he was a reliable source or not, but I have found that

throughout his book some of the details are not correct,

but here is what he has:

Con82 George William Yother, Sr. of Union county Georgia was born

May 9, 1809 and died May 6, 1866. He married Elizabeth Abercrumbie in

1833. (Your notes indicate he may have fought in the Civil War. I found a

George Yother listed in the union in the 6th Tennessee Mounted Infantry,

Co. A and I found a George Yother listed in the confederate army with

the 38th NC Infantry, Co. F, I don’t know if either one is who we are

looking for.) Elizabeth Abercrumbie was born April 14, 1817 and

died Dec 24, 1880.

Con821 - Wilson Yother born Jan 18, 1835

Con822 - John J. Yother born Feb 12, 1837. Died 1864

The family book says "John fought in the Civil War. At the age of 27

He was missing in action, he was killed in 1864 in the Rossville Gap where

now stands the Iowa Monument. His entire company went to General

Thomas at Chickamauga after a hard fight against Gen. Bragg’s Army on

Missionary Ridge in Chattanooga." (My grandfather indicates in his notes

that John fought for the union but so far I have not been able to locate a

John Yother fighting for the union. I have only looked in the southern

states though. I did find three John Yothers listed as fighting for the

Confederate side. {10th Missouri Infantry, Co. F/ 19th Tennessee Infantry

Co. F/ and the Cherokee Legion Infantry, State Guard, Co. D} I checked the

roster for the Cherokee Legion Guard and found two Yother’s but they were

the wrong age and I have not discovered rosters for the other units yet.)

Con823 - Mariah Jane Yother was born Dec 6, 1839, died July 18, 1887.

She married Robert Jackson July 10, 1856. Robert died July 28, 1856.

In 1858 Mariah married Isaac Reed. Isaac was born May 9, 1837, died

Oct 6, 1875. They had one daughter, Lizzie Jane Reed (my grandfather's

mother) who was born Jan 23, 1868. in 1877 Mariah married James

Futerel.

Con824 - James Fate Yother was born 1842. He left home and went

west.

(?Yother James D died 06/02/1862 Pvt Co C 5 Tenn Inf 6 2 1862 Bur

Con825 - Adam David Yother was born June 15, 1848

Con826 - George W. Yother, Jr. was born Nov 12, 1849 and died 1914.

He married Bell Clemons in 1880 and they had no children.

Con827 - Sarah Ann Yother was born Feb 28, 1852 and she died 1918.

She married Jess Brown in 1872. Jess was born in 1853 and died in 1907.

They had 5 sons and 2 daughters.

Con828 - (Not mentioned in my grandfather’s record)

Con829 - Mary Yother was born Jan 9, 1861. She married Joe Stringer

in 1885. Joe was born in 1860. They had 3 sons and 2 daughters.

That is all the information in my grandfather’s record book, I’m sorry

there is not more but hopefully this helps to fill in a few little gaps. Like

I said, I’m not sure how accurate the information is but at least it’s a

starting point. Thanks again for the Yoder web site, it’s really wonderful.

From David Hughes--dghughes2@, "On Mary Amanda

Yother Curtis so far. According to her husbands

pension file(William J. Curtis), his wife's name is

Mary Amanda Yother and they were married 11-27-1859 in

Fannin Co GA. by a Soloman Stansbury. This info comes

from a page of a Curtis bible which was in the pension

file and was used to show that they were married to

the pension office. However, Fannin Co. has no record

of this marriage that I can find, but I did find a

Soloman Stansbury who had married a John W. Curtis &

Nancy Berong in Fannin Co. in 1860. I have not looked

to see if there is a record of William J. and Mary

Amanda in Gilmer Co. GA yet, it is possible that they

are listed in Gilmer since Fannin was formed from

parts of that Co. in 1856, I think. Oh, John W.

Curtis is a brother of William J. Curtis I think. In

this pension file of William J. there are many

depositions(appartenally they started investigating

him about 1886 and this went on until 1899). There is

a deposition from a J.D. Yother dated 1886 from

Ellijay which says that J. D. Yother is 69 years old

and that he has known William J. Curtis since he was a

boy. In 1889 a Special Examiner came around again and

tried to get another deposition from J. D. Yother in

Ellijay, but the only J. D. Yother that was there was

a Jefferson D. Yother aged 35 who claimed that he had

never made a deposition and that his cousin had

married William J. Curtis in GA and that he knew of

William J. Curtis and Mary Amanda Yother before the

Civil War. There is a report from the Special

Examiner that when he asked about another J. D. Yother

who had given a deposition in 1886, he was told that

J. D. Yother had died in Pickens Co. about a year and

a half ago.

"When Mary Amanda filed for a widow's pension, she said

that she was born 11-21-1842 in Morganton, GA. Mary

Amanda's death certificate in 1919 lists her father &

mother as John D. Yother & Annie Blackstock. I can

find no record that she was ever married to a Leming,

I don't know where that info came from. I have

noticed on the 1850 census for John D. Yother, that

there is a girl named Mary aged 7 in his household. I

believe this to be Mary Amanda Yother. I can find no

record of William J. Curtis or Mary Amanda Yother in

the 1860 census so far. That's all I have so far."
