Home Times Monthly

A newsletter for Pond Home residents with all the news that’s fit to print

June 2012 volume 62

To My Dear Residents:

The month of June at Pond Home has traditionally been set aside by the Department Heads and me as Employee Appreciation Month. It is when we take extra time to acknowledge the dedication of our staff. I know from the feedback I get from you residents and your family members that Pond Home is a beautiful, well maintained building, but it is the staff who really make it the warm and inviting home for 40+ seniors that it is known for being. Please take a little time to add your own words of appreciation to an employee or two that you are thankful to have in your life. Kind words mean so very much to all of us.

Thanks for reading,

Becky Annis, Administrator

Resident Spotlight

This month’s resident in the spotlight is Eleanor Stillman Buchinski. Eleanor was born in Waverly, NY on January 16, 1932. She lived with her parents and older brother and sister in their home in Laceyville, Pennsylvania (population 500)! She lived there until graduating from Laceyville High in 1950, part of a graduating class of 15. The school had four classrooms on the first floor for grades one through eight. She remembers the big deal it was to “move” upstairs for the four years of high school. They even got to move from one classroom to another when in high school. During the summer she and her family spent a lot of time at a family camp on Mehoopany Creek in Forkston, Pennsylvania. Eleanor’s mother was one of nine, so there were many cousins to hang out with in the summer. Eleanor attended Centenary Junior College in Hackettstown, New Jersey and graduated in 1952. From there she headed to the big city of Rochester, NY for a job at Eastman Kodak. She chose Rochester because her paternal Grandmother lived there. When she started she lived at the YWCA and made some good friends there. One of them invited her to join the Rochester Oratorio Society (choral group) with her. This lead to Eleanor meeting her future husband when she asked him for a ride home at Thanksgiving. His name was Joseph Buczynski (yes, the spelling is corrected, later Joseph and Eleanor got the spelling legally changed to Buchinski). They began dating after that trip home. He was taking all her time until Eleanor finally asked him if he was going to marry her! His answer was a memorable, “of course”. They married on January 2, 1954 because they had both used up all their vacation time! While their children were young Eleanor attended University of Rhode Island Extension School in Providence to get her bachelor’s degree in History. Like so many of us Eleanor reports that her five children are her pride and joy of her life now that she is widowed. She stays connected with them all via computer by email or iChat, even though they live all over the country. They all work and have given Eleanor ten grandchildren. Anne is the first born and a psychiatrist in Seattle, Washington. Next came Allen who works at Apple and is a tremendous help with any computer problems, even though he lives in San Jose, California. Then Joan entered their lives. She is an R.N. who works at Dartmouth Hitchcock in New Hampshire though she lives across the river in Vermont. Number four is Julie who lives the closest. She is a Social Worker in a school and has a private practice. She has three children and lives in Brookline, Massachusetts. Her ‘baby’ (who’s 48) is John who lives in Santa Cruz, California with his wife and three young children. Music has always been an important part of her life. Her parents gave her a baby grand for her sixteenth birthday to encourage her talent! She was the organist at St. Mary’s in Wrentham for over ten years while Joe was the Cantor. Eleanor is a singer and made All-State in high school singing Soprano. Eleanor used to accompany her dad while they sang at Laceyville Rotary Club meetings, making them possibly the first co-ed Rotary meetings! After the meetings Eleanor would stay and play 500 with her dad and his friends. Eleanor followed in her mother’s footsteps (who lived at Pond Home from 1980-‘86), moving in on Oct. 18, 2011. Editor’s Note: The fun quota was amped up immediately upon Eleanor’s arrival. Eleanor reports she loves being here and her yellow room.

Employee Spotlight

This month’s spotlighted employee is Ron Cloutier. Ron is the Food Service Supervisor and has been employed at Pond Home since June 12, 1995. He and his younger sister Michele were raised by a close family in the Attleboro area. He is half French and half Italian, but it was the Italian side of the family that influenced his career path. He was inspired by the wonderful smells and feelings of family that resonated from his Great Grandmother’s and Grandmother’s kitchens. This made him want to learn more about the culinary arts. He graduated from Johnson & Wales University in 1988 and began working as the chef at The Plaza Inn Restaurant and later Luciano’s here in Wrentham. What made him decide to leave the restaurant world for long term care are the nicer hours that a chef can have, allowing him time for family and hobbies. What has kept him at Pond Home for so many years is the friendly, homey environment and his connections to the staff and residents. Ron’s parents live in Tiverton, RI now. Ron married his wife Katie in 2009 (after meeting her at Pond Home) and they have a beautiful little girl named Willow who is 15 months old. Their ‘first baby’ is Forbin a three year old ½ husky/1/2 lab. Forbin occasionally goes to doggie day care where Ron can watch him on a computer web site! When not cooking at Pond Home Ron is called on at all family gatherings and holidays to do the cooking! Ron is an avid sports fan, but the only local team he cheers for is the Boston Bruins. He loves the Dallas Cowboys for football and the Baltimore Orioles for baseball. He and his dad try to go to at least one Orioles game a year, which is an outing he really looks forward to. He enjoys snowboarding and playing roller and ice hockey for fun. He is currently the goalie and captain of his team, “Color Dynamics” that plays in the Warwick Roller Hockey League. We have all enjoyed many delicious meals that Ron has prepared over the years and our thankful his grandmothers encouraged his talent.
