POSTION DESCRIPTION

Southwest Youth and Family Services partners with youth and families to transform their futures. We serve culturally and economically diverse families, youth, and children in southwest Seattle and King County and promote healthy family functioning; early childhood learning; student academic success; and positive youth development.

The Grant Writer position works as part of the Development team to meet SWYFS's strategic goals and produce grants and proposals that secure funding to substantially contribute to SWYFS's $4 million budget. The Grant Writer must be a dynamic and creative individual with excellent technical and narrative writing and communication skills. A solid understanding of program development, implementation, and cross cultural considerations is essential.

REQUIREMENTS

1. BA in related field or equivalent experience and training; 3 years' experience. 2. Proven track record of success in obtaining funding through grants in both private and public sectors, including

grants, proposals, letters of inquiry, requests for investment, and other formats, both hard copy and online. 3. Strong research skills and ability to process and organize complex amounts of information. 4. Ability and experience locating new potential funding sources and tracking grant cycles of local funders and

governments. 5. Establish and maintain personal contact and relationships with foundation and corporate contacts and program

officers 6. Clear and persuasive writing and speaking skills, excellent English, and the ability to edit others' work; ability

to tell a compelling story. 7. Demonstrated familiarity with local funders and community institutions. 8. Strong ability to match writing and communications styles to differing needs, such as reports, newsletters,

public speaking and websites. 9. Strong experience with outcomes based planning, monitoring, and evaluation. 10. Experience with quantitative, qualitative, and process evaluation. 11. Comfortable and competent in developing and presenting budgets. 12. Ability to work effectively and flexibly in intermittently stressful, rapidly changing, and deadline driven

environment. 13. Very strong proficiency in Word and Excel. 14. Strong ability to communicate in culturally competent manner among staff members, colleagues, and persons

and communities served by SWYFS.

15. Ability to work comfortably and effectively with people and groups of varying racial, ethnic, educational, and class backgrounds and experiences.

16. Ability to work independently and in teams as required. 17. Willingness to submit to and pass a criminal background check. 18. Preferred but not required: Clear driving record with no more than two moving violations in the last three

years; access to a working automobile; and proof of insurance.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Research

Monitor funding/grant databases and other sources of information for new and on-going opportunities to meet agency and program operating and strategic needs.

Research, communicate, and maintain positive relationships with representatives of local, regional, and other foundations and corporations for potential funding opportunities, in cooperation with supervisor.

Research and evaluate general prospects for public and private grant sources for restricted and unrestricted funding.

Identify potential sources of funding for needs identified by program staff whenever feasible.

Grant and Proposal Writing

Meet agency funding goals for government and private foundation income by drafting program designs with input from Program Managers; and developing proposals and grants from draft through final submission.

Prepare and review drafts of budgets; work with supervisor to secure approval from Executive Director. Package proposal contents to meet distinct donor requirements; submit proposals and grants on time by

appropriate means. Track deadlines for, prepare, and submit grant and proposal reports as required by funders. Coordinate site visits and attend these and other meetings with potential funders, as needed. Understand and be prepared to present institutional history and programs in writing and verbal presentations. Working with Development Director, participate in developing and articulating agency vision/s for SWYFS

programs and organizational development.

Data Management, Administration, and Recordkeeping

Monitor and evaluate progress toward grant and proposal fundraising goals, prepare reports for the board and recommend changes or additions to the plan, as needed.

In coordination with Development Director, maintain current and accurate donor and fundraising database, including data entry and creating reports as needed.

Use agency database to obtain and analyze data and statistics relevant to grant and proposal writing. Report on program and fund development to staff and Board of Directors, in cooperation with Development

Director.

Other

Maintain an in-depth knowledge and understanding of agency policies and procedures. Assist other staff members in developing written materials as needed and requested. Represent Southwest Youth and Family Services in community forums, meetings and other environments as

needed, or requested by supervisor. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
