When selecting recipes for this category, contestants should consider foods that are lower in fat, sodium, and calories to not ruin one’s appetite.Main Dish-The main dish is usually the heaviest, heartiest, and most substantial dish in a meal. In a meal consisting of several courses, the main dish is served during the main course and is the featured dish of the meal. The key ingredient is usually meat or another protein food, but they may contain other foods.Side Dish- Dish-Side dishes are foods that are usually served along with a main dish or as accompaniments to the main course. Suggested dishes may include salads, cooked vegetables, cooked fruit, pasta or rice dishes, and/or combination vegetable dishes.Healthy Dessert-Healthy can still mean delicious when it comes to desserts. Dishes in this category should be served at the end of the meal or for special occasions. Contestants should modify traditional recipes with healthy substitutions and consider MyPlate and Dietary Guidelines when selecting recipes for this category.County Rules and Guidelines:To limit the gathering of large groups, this years Food Show will be come and go. A Doodle Poll or something similar will be emailed out to participants after the deadline for you to sign up for your interview time. Siblings and family members should attempt to sign up in subsequent time slots. Face coverings must be worn by parents and participants at all times. The face covering may be removed by the participant once his/her interview has started. Please do not bring anyone who is not participating in the Food Show. The COVID-19 screening form must be brought with each participant to the Food Show. Please have this filled out beforehand.Each participant is to bring one (1) serving of their recipe to be judged at their designated interview time. You may bring your serving on whatever serving dish you would like, it does not have to be on a disposable plate/bowl. Garnishes must be edible. No usage of ovens, microwaves, or the like will be available to use. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, judges will not be tasting the dish this year.Juniors and Intermediates will have five (5) minutes for to give an oral presentation using the information on the score sheet as a guide. Juniors and Intermediates need to be prepared for questions that could be asked by the judges following the presentation. Seniors will have five (5) minutes for their presentation and four (4) minutes for their interview.No alcohol or ingredients containing alcohol can be used in recipes!**NEW THIS YEAR:4-Her’s will participate in a skills showcase and a knowledge showcase. After interviewing, members will demonstrate a skill in front of the judges. The time limit for the skills showcase will be announced upon arrival. All equipment and tools will be provided for the skill. The skill will be appropriate for the age division. Skills could be but are not limited to:Knife skillsDemonstrating how to measure ingredientsMeal PlanningKitchen Gadget SkillsAs part of the knowledge showcase, members will take a 10 question quiz comprising of multiple choice and true/false questions. These questions will relate to basic nutrition, MyPlate, food safety, healthy lifestyles ect. No study materials will be provided. 4-H members should use the resources available on the state 4-H website to guide them in their studying. Questions will be age appropriate as well.AwardsAwards will be announced via a Microsoft Teams meeting. Link to join the meeting will be sent out to Food Show participants the morning of the contest. Time will be determined after all entries have been submitted. The first place entry from each category in each age division (minus the Clover Kids) will advance to the District Contest in Abilene on November 19. Deadline to Register:All recipes are to be uploaded to the county website no later than October 9. Instructions for uploading recipe:Go to over the “4-H” tab at the top.Click on “4-H Food Show”Fill in the appropriate information including 4-Her’s name, division level, and recipe category.Click the “upload” button to upload your recipe.
