Day 1 Introduce Altruistic, Passionate, and Turmoil

In this lesson, the students:

? Learn and use the words altruistic, passionate, and turmoil ? Review synonyms ? Review antonyms ? Use prompts to extend a conversation

Words Taught

altruistic Someone who is altruistic puts the well-being of others first. An altruistic person is unselfish and compassionate.

passionate (p. 9) If you are passionate about something, you feel very strongly about it.

turmoil (p. 14) Turmoil means "great confusion or noisy disorder."

1 Introduce and Define Altruistic and Review

Synonyms and Antonyms

Show pages 4?5 of Twenty-two Cents. Remind the students that Muhammad Yunus learns at an early age how important it is to help others who are less fortunate as he sees his mother often give away food, clothes, and money to those in need. Tell the students that Muhammad's mother is altruistic and that altruistic is the first word the students will learn today. Explain that someone who is altruistic puts the well-being of others first; an altruistic person is unselfish and compassionate. Tell the students that altruistic and unselfish are synonyms, and that altruistic and selfish are antonyms.

Display word card 79 ( WA1) and have the students say the word altruistic.

Teacher Note

2 Discuss Being Altruistic

Give a few examples of times when someone you know has been altruistic.

You might say: "My grandmother made an effort to be altruistic throughout her life. She regularly donated money to charity and she volunteered at a local soup kitchen every weekend. I had a professor in college who was altruistic when she wrote a book about the effort to fight malaria in Tanzania and then donated all of the money from her book's sales to the cause of fighting the disease."

3 Play "Altruistic or Not Altruistic?"

Tell the students that partners will play a game called "Altruistic or Not Altruistic?" You will describe someone's actions or behavior, and partners will discuss whether what you describe is altruistic or not altruistic and explain why they think so.

Begin by reading the following scenario aloud twice:

? A volunteer firefighter risks her life to help and protect others.

Ask: Q Is the volunteer firefighter altruistic? Why? [Click 3 to reveal the

prompt.] Turn to your partner.

PROMPT 3: "I think the [firefighter] [is/is not] altruistic because . . ."

After partners have talked, have one or two volunteers use the prompt to share their thinking with the class.

Using the same procedure, discuss the following scenarios:

4 Introduce and Define Passionate

Show pages 8?9 of Twenty-two Cents and review that education was extremely important to Muhammad's parents. Read the first paragraph aloud, emphasizing the word passionate. Tell the students that passionate is the next word they will learn today, and explain that if you are passionate about something, you feel very strongly about it. Point out that Muhammad's parents are passionate, or feel very strongly, about the importance of their children's education.

Display word card 80 ( WA2) and have the students say the word passionate.

5 Discuss Being Passionate About Something

Explain that people can be passionate, or feel very strongly, about something that they love or enjoy or something that they hate or that angers them. Give one or two examples of things you or someone you know is passionate about.

You might say: "My brother is passionate about nature and the need to protect it. Whenever he can, he visits national parks and wilderness areas, and he donates money to organizations that protect the environment. He is also passionate in his opposition of cruelty to animals. He often speaks out about the right of every creature to be treated humanely, and he refuses to buy any products made by companies that treat animals cruelly."

Use "Think, Pair, Share" to discuss: Q What is something that you are passionate about? Why are you passionate

about it? [Pause; click 1 on WA2 to reveal the first prompt.] Turn to your partner.

PROMPT 1: "I am passionate about [cooking] because . . ." After partners have talked, click 2 on word card 80 (WA2) to reveal the next prompt. Have a few volunteers use the prompt to share their partners' thinking with the class.

PROMPT 2: "My partner said that she is passionate about [cooking] because . . ."

Discuss as a class: Q If someone were passionate about staying healthy and fit, what might
