“One Anothers”

Why Should Men Meet Practicing the “One Anothers”

Basil Marotta Jericho Ministries

Session Outline: Purpose of men’s groups….Why should men meet?

Generally men are isolated. Many lead lives of frustration and quiet desperation. We think, “no one is experiencing the problems I am facing.” This is a lie from the pit of hell. The truth is we men need each other.

It takes a man to teach a man how to be a man. A woman cannot teach a man this, it must come from another man.

Eccl 4:7-12) Again I saw something meaningless under the sun: {8} There was a man all alone; he had neither son nor brother. There was no end to his toil, yet his eyes were not content with his wealth. "For whom am I toiling," he asked, "and why am I depriving myself of enjoyment?" This too is meaningless-- a miserable business! {9} Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work: {10} If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no (one to help him up! {11} Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? {12} Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

(Prov 27:17) As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.

The purpose of Jericho’s men’s groups men’s ministry is to give men a safe place to meet…where men will experience significant personal growth through Christ centered teaching, meaningful fellowship, and open discussions of the lessons which leads to practical applications of the principles learned. There are many places to hear good teaching We stress the fellowship and sharing in the small groups. This is what we can offer that is unique in helping men grow in Christ and become men of character. To practice the “one anothers” of Scripture.

(John 13:16,17) I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

We must lead, but we must be servant leaders. The welfare and well-being of those under our charge must take precedence over our needs and desires.

(Rom 15:7) Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.

We must learn and decide to accept others how and where they are.

(Gal 5:13) You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love.

We are to love one another…and serve others. Jesus said I didn’t come to be served, but to serve, (Mth 20:28)

(1 Th 5:11) Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.

Are we a source of encouragement or discouragement to others? (Eph 4:29) Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

Col 3:13) Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.

If we don’t forgive others we can’t be forgiven, and we carry that root of bitterness, which affects us all our lives.

(Col 3:16) Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.

We are to teach, and admonish one another with wisdom…and in love…not with a critical spirit.

(Rom 12:10) Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves.

This is a decision we must make…not a feeling…to be devoted to and love one another.

From Rick Warren “Purpose Driven Life:

We need each other. Men have been isolated too long. We all need brothers to help us.

Some questions to ask ourselves when committing to find potential “brothers”:

When things go badly, whom do you talk to?

Who can you be totally honest with?

Who is your sounding board?

Who do you take your advice from?

When you fail, who will stand by you?

Who do you face life’s struggles with?

Who holds you accountable?

Question: On which of these one anothers do you need improvement? Discuss why you came to this TLG meeting? What do you hope to get out of these meetings?
