(Heb 11:32-34) And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gideon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthah; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets: Who through faith [conviction: belief] subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.

(Judg 10:15-18) And the children of Israel said unto the LORD, We have sinned: do thou unto us whatsoever seemeth good unto thee; deliver [save] us only, we pray thee, this day. And they put away the strange gods from among them, and served the LORD: and his soul was grieved for the misery of Israel. Then the children of Ammon [inbred; a son of Lot] were gathered together, and encamped in Gilead [i.e. camping out at the foot of the cross]. And the children of Israel assembled themselves together, and encamped in Mizpeh [watch tower]. And the people and princes of Gilead said one to another, What man is he that will begin to fight against the children of Ammon? he shall be head [ruler] over all the inhabitants of Gilead.

1. Gilead = Heb: heap of testimony, heap of witness, mound of stones, rocky region.

2. Commentary: Gilead symbolizes the brazen altar, the cross of Jesus Christ, stony ground of the sower.

3. (Mat 13:24-30) Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field [“The field is the world” v.38]: But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares [darnel or false grain] among the wheat, and went his way. But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also. So the servants of the householder [head of the family, master of the house] came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence [where] then hath it tares? He said unto them, An enemy [“the devil” v.39] hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up [collect]? But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up [collect] the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers [“the angels” v.39], Gather [collect] ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather [assemble (selves together)] the wheat into my barn.

4. Commentary: the barn of Jesus Christ is made of priest-boards that are separated (justified) and shaped (sanctified) and assembled trees. The barn of Jesus Christ is the antitype of the ark of Noah, the ark of Moses, the ark of covenant, the tabernacle of Moses, and the New Testament ship(s) of Jesus.

5. (Judg 13:5) For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son [Samson: sunlight]; and no razor shall come on his head: for the child shall be a Nazarite [separated] unto God from the womb: and he shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines.

(Judg 11:1-3) Now Jephthah [he will open, he opens] the Gileadite was a mighty man of valour, and he was the son of an harlot [whore, prostitute]: and Gilead begat Jephthah [i.e. the cross begat Jephthah, a type of salvation]. And Gilead's wife bare him sons; and his wife's sons grew up, and they thrust out Jephthah, and said unto him, Thou shalt not inherit in our father's house; for thou art the son of a strange woman. Then Jephthah fled from his brethren, and dwelt in the land of Tob: and there were gathered vain men [empty; fig. worthless] to Jephthah, and went out [raiding] with him.

1. Commentary: Jephthah is an earlier type of Samson (Judg 13-16) who is a type of Jesus Christ. Jephthah “opened” the fight. He also rashly opened his mouth in a vow. Jephthah had become a raider, looting and pillaging the enemies of Israel. He and his band were wellknown and had established a reputation of successful forays against Israel’s Ammonite oppressors.

2. (Judg 6:11-13) And there came an angel of the LORD, and sat under an oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained unto Joash the Abiezrite: and his son Gideon [feller (warrior) /// to fell a tree] threshed wheat by the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites. And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him, and said unto him, The LORD is with thee, thou mighty man of valour. And Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord, if the LORD be with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where be all his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt? but now the LORD hath forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites.

3. thrust out = Heb: to drive out from a possession; espec. to expatriate [Dict: to banish (a person) from his native country] or divorce:--cast up (out), divorced (woman), drive away (forth, out), expel, X surely put away, trouble, thrust out.

Tob = Heb: good /// good in the widest sense; (good, a good or good thing, a good man or woman; the good, goods or good things, good men or women):--beautiful, best, better, bountiful, cheerful, at ease, X fair (word), (be in) favour, fine, glad, good (deed, -lier, liest, -ly, -ness, -s), graciously, joyful, kindly, kindness, liketh (best), loving, merry, X most, pleasant, + pleaseth, pleasure, precious, prosperity, ready, sweet, wealth, welfare, (be) well ([-favoured]).

5. (1 Sam 22:1,2) David therefore departed thence, and escaped to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father's house heard it, they went down thither to him. And every one that was in distress, and every one that was in debt, and every one that was discontented, gathered themselves unto him; and he became a captain over them: and there were with him about four hundred men.

6. (Mat 21:33-41) Hear another parable: There was a certain householder, which planted a vineyard, and hedged it round about [with what?], and digged a winepress in it, and built a tower [a watch tower], and let it out to husbandmen [farmers (married to the land)], and went into a far country: And when the time of the fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the husbandmen, that they might receive the fruits of it. And the husbandmen took his servants, and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another. Again, he sent other servants more than the first: and they did unto them likewise. But last of all he sent unto them his son, saying, They will reverence [highly respect] my son. But when the husbandmen saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and let us seize on his inheritance. And they caught him, and cast him out of the vineyard, and slew him. When the lord therefore of the vineyard cometh, what will he do unto those husbandmen? They say unto him, He will miserably destroy those wicked men, and will let out his vineyard unto other husbandmen, which shall render him the fruits in their seasons.

(Judg 11:4-11) And it came to pass in process of time, that the children of Ammon [inbred; a son of Lot] made war against Israel [prince with God]. And it was so, that when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah out of the land of Tob: And they said unto Jephthah, Come, and be our captain [military leader], that we may fight with the children of Ammon. And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, Did not ye hate me, and expel me out of my father's house? and why are ye come unto me now when ye are in distress? And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, Therefore we turn again to thee now, that thou mayest go with us, and fight against the children of Ammon, and be our head [govenor] over all the inhabitants of Gilead. And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, If ye bring me home again to fight against the children of Ammon, and the LORD deliver them before me, shall I be your head? And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, The LORD be witness between us, if we do not so according to thy words. Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and captain over them: and Jephthah uttered all his words before the LORD in Mizpeh [watch tower].

(Ezek 3:17) Son of man, I have made thee a watchman unto the house of Israel:

therefore hear the word at my mouth, and give them warning from me.
