4. Total 1-year request: $16,641 (ANTH proposes co-funding @ $16,641; total project cost = $33,282)

5. Description of the project (limit to ½ page):

The Department of Anthropology proposes Smart Classoom installations as a critical part of a comprehensive renovation of the Biological Anthropology and Archaeology Instructional Labs located in the Clark Building (C-249 and A-26). These lab spaces are used for important and widespread student training in the content and methods of Anthropology. In the pre-upgrades state in which the labs now exist, approximately 500 students per year use the labs as registered students of ANTH courses. With the SMART upgrades, the ANTH Department will be able to schedule more courses in these labs, resulting in approximately an additional 100 students per year using the labs. Upgraded instructional technology in these labs will more accurately convey to potential students not only the cutting-edge nature of the Department’s scholarly research, but the high quality of the instruction provided to students.

6. Approximate schedule for the project – UTFAB Bylaws require that all proposals include a 3-year project plan. Please describe the timeline for your project, and address sustainability (limit to ½ page):

All the items in the project represent one-time spending, with no new maintenance costs. These technology upgrades will create an aesthetic enhancement to the Department’s ability to instruct and recruit students and cultivate donors for the Department, the College, and the University. The project is sustainable in that the aesthetic aspects of these renovations will attract not only tuition from additional students but also potential alumni and other donor support. The ANTH Department will take responsibility for all maintenance of installed equipment, and the CLA Dean’s Office (College of Liberal Arts) will provide technical support and maintenance expertise.

The SMART room installations will take place at the end of the Spring 2011 semester and should take approximately three weeks to complete.

7. Please provide a discussion of how the systems will be supported (limit to ¼ page):

Classroom Media will support the Smart Classroom systems once installed, as they currently support the old technology.

8. Please provide a discussion of how users will be supported (limit to ¼ page):

Classroom Media will support instructors with digital video streaming and other external media projected through the Smart Classroom system. We understand that we need to, accept that, and agree to remunerate Classroom Media for their support services.

9. Please describe benefits to students, in accordance with UTFAB funding criteria (see Article VII of the UTFAB Bylaws () :

The proposed Smart Classroom installations in these archaeological and biological anthropology instructional spaces represent an important benefit to students at CSU.

Smart Classroom installations are needed to bring the instructional quality of the Biological Anthropology (C-249) and Archaeological labs (A-26) into the 21st Century. The Biological Anthropology and Archaeology instructional labs are used for important AUCC core and Anthropology training. For example, at least 6 sections of the AUCC core course ANTH 121 Biological Anthropology Lab take place in the Biological Instructional Lab every semester. Courses critical to the Anthropology major and the Concentration in Archaeology, such as public archaeology, Great Plains archaeology, and archaeological investigation, take place in the Archaeology Instructional Lab, which was recently moved from a remote location on Timberline to new unrenovated space in the Clark Building (A-26). In addition, the AUCC 4C Capstone Seminar will take place in A-26 if these technology renovations are approved. Currently, approximately 500 students per year use these labs as registered students of courses scheduled in the labs. If the SMART upgrades are installed, an additional 100 or so students per year will be affected, as the ANTH Department will be able to schedule additional lab classes in the labs.

This technological upgrade is essential for the Department to keep up with the state of the field and current pedagogy. Currently, old TVs, projectors on rolling carts, and overhead transparencies are the only equipment available. The student evaluations for the courses that are currently offered in these instructional labs are consistently critical of the instructional technology. Smart Classrooms are needed to meet the reasonable expectation of students that CSU provides students with state-of-the-art instruction. In particular, since archaeology is the study of material culture and biological anthropology is the study of human evolution and variation, these subfields are unusual in the degree to which they must use objects, like lithic and ceramic assemblages or skeletal materials, to bring theories and methodologies to life. Specialized classroom technologies for laboratory-based studies, like object projection, magnification projection, and high quality digital media streaming, are needed to provide top notch experiential instruction for the undergraduate and graduate students studying archaeology and biological anthropology.

10. UTFAB is required to submit budgets in accordance with Student Fee Review Board (SFRB) budget categories. Please provide a 1-year budget in the following SFRB categories.

Use the space below to describe and explain the above budget, including how the above budget fits in with the 3-year plan.

The accompanying budget (separate Excel spreadsheet) is based on quotes obtained from Facilities Management.
