Routine dental procedures can cause problems with your artificial joint. Luckily, it can easily be avoided. Certain patients need to take antibiotic premedication before most dental appointments. It is an easy prescription...usually four capsules one hour before your appointment.
The flowchart on the next page shows who might need to take antibiotics before dental appointments.

• Previous infections in your artificial joints;
• Have an inflammatory type of arthritis
• Have type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes
• Have hemophilia
• Suppressed immune system
• Malnourished
• History of malignancy
Antibiotic premedication not needed.
Are you having any of these dental procedures:
• Extractions
• Periodontal procedures
• Cleaning
• Implant placement surgery
• Root canal treatment
Antibiotic premedication may or may not needed; further evaluation required.
