I. COURSE DESCRIPTION

The course is designed to teach Spanish to advance students (Heritage Spanish Speakers) through cultural contexts using literature works. Emphasis is placed on listening, speaking, reading, and writing the Spanish language in cultural settings. Proficiency in oral communication skills is essential to learning and use of the language. New technology will be used with the inclusion of PowerPoint presentations, Google Drive, and Internet activities.

II. ALIGNMENT OF STATE GOALS

Students are to use the target language to:

- communicate within and beyond the classroom setting,

- develop an understanding of the customs, art, literature, history and geography associated with the target language,

- make connections and reinforce knowledge and skills across academic, vocational and technical disciplines.

III. LANGUAGE GOALS

Textbooks: AP Spanish: Preparing for the Language and Culture Examination, Spanish Four Years and Lecturas Avanzadas (Amsco Publications)

Spanish AP Language Preparation workbooks as well as magazines will also be incorporated into the overall curriculum. Authentic Spanish texts, such as poems, short stories, and newspaper and magazine articles, will be used periodically. In addition to these texts, certain cultural and geographical films will be shown and incorporated into lessons. Classes will visit the language lab on a rotating basis, roughly once every two weeks. Students will complete computer and internet activities that reinforce skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

After the end of the Second Semester, students will be able to:

• use antonyms for vocabulary words,

• conjugate and use verbs in the perfect tenses,

• use the passive voice,

• write a text using present , past, future and perfect tenses,

• orally present a position or opinion on a particular topic,

• write their own definitions for vocabulary in the target language,

• conjugate and use verbs in the subjunctive mood,

• orally defend a position on a particular cultural product,

• write a formal essay,

• analyze poetry from the target culture.

IV. GRADING CRITERIA: Students will be evaluated based on the following breakdown:

40%: A. CLASSROOM PARTICIPATION - Students earn points daily by putting forth effort and / or completing in class

assignments and participating in class discussions. Their daily attendance, arrival to class on time, and

behavioral conduct (including the use of appropriate language) will also be taken into consideration.

40%: B. FORMATIVE AND SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENTS: Students will be assessed every two weeks on lessons

and chapters covered in class. If, for whatever reason, a student misses a quiz or a test, it is his/her

responsibility to see me within a week to set up a make-up exam session. Students will also be given one

performance-based activity (project) for each chapter / unit.

10%: C. HOMEWORK / INCENTIVE – Completion of homework assignments is expected (three a week). They will be

checked weekly.

10%: D. FINAL EXAMINATIONS – These will be cumulative, skills-based assessment including speaking, reading,

writing, and listening components.

V. GRADING SCALE: A = 100 – 90 B = 89 - 80 C = 79 - 70 D = 69 - 60 F = 59 or below

VI. RULES AND PROCEDURES: All students are expected to:

- Be in class ON TIME!

- Complete all assignments to the best of their ability and turn them in when they are due,

- Maintain a portfolio / folder for their homework, class assignments, quizzes, tests, etc.

- Bring a note whenever they are absent,

- Leave ALL electronic devices in their lockers,

- Wear their IDs AT ALL TIMES

- Refer to the school rules in the agenda and follow Ms. Soto’s classroom rules, posted in the back cabinet.

VII. CLASS SUPPLIES: Students are expected to bring to class every day the following materials:

- Loose-leaf paper and one three ring binder. - A composition book,

- One folder with pockets, - Black or blue pen only (NO PENCILS PLEASE).
