DFA Three Group SPSS Exercise

This study examined differences in anxiety level among three countries (USA coded as 1, Egypt coded as 2, and Brazil coded as 3). Anxiety was assessed four ways, (a) heart palpitations, (b) chest pain, (c) shortness of breath, and (d) withdrawal. As a follow-up to the MANOVA, a DFA was conducted with country as the group variable and the four measures of anxiety as the independent variables.

1) How many statistically significant Functions (variants) were produced by a DFA?

2) Define (i.e., provide an appropriate name) for the functions/variants.

3) How do the variant(s) differentiate among the groups?

4) What is the overall classification statistic?

5) Which group was more accurately classified?

ANSWERS

1) How many statistically significant Functions (variants) were produced by a DFA?

TWO STATISTICALLY SIGNIFICANT FUNCTIONS (VARIATES) WERE PRODUCED BY THE DFA

|Wilks' Lambda |

|Test of Function(s) |Wilks' Lambda |Chi-square |df |Sig. |

|1 through 2 |.636 |292.999 |8 |.000 |

|2 |.956 |28.890 |3 |.000 |

2) Define (i.e., provide an appropriate name) for the functions/variants.

FUNCTION 1 COULD BE LABELED CARDIOVASCULAR ELEMENTS OF ANXIETY (heart palpitations, chest pain, and shortness of breath) WHILE FUNCTION 2 COULD BE INTERPRETED AS A BEHAVIORAL COMPONENT TO ANXIETY (withdrawal).

|Structure Matrix |

| |Function |

| |1 |2 |

|chest pain |.972* |-.181 |

|shortness of breath |.552* |.170 |

|heart palpitations |.279* |.026 |

|withdrawal |.468 |.658* |

3) How do the variant(s) differentiate among the groups?

FUNCTION 1 (CARDIOVASCULAR ELEMENTS OF ANXIETY) SEPARATED EGYPT FROM BRAZIL AND USA WHILE FUNCTION 2 (BEHAVIORAL COMPONENT TO ANXIETY) SEPARATED BRAZIL FROM THE USA.

|Functions at Group Centroids |

|country |Function |

| |1 |2 |

|1 USA |-.806 |-.325 |

|2 Egypt |.814 |-.043 |

|3 Brazil |-.474 |.246 |

4) What is the overall classification statistic?

57.1% OF THE RESPONDENTS WERE CORRECTLY CLASSIFIED.

|Classification Resultsa |

5) Which group was more accurately classified?

EGYPT HAD THE HIGHEST ACCURACY RATE WITH 72.1%.
