In November, the eighth webinar course entitled Shaping the Way We Teach English offered by U.S. Department of State Office of English Language Programs will be continued. The 90-minute webinars will run at ETRC on November 7th, November 14th and November 28th 2012 at 15:00.

Webinar 8.3 is POSTPONED until Wednesday, November 7th.

A certificate is offered to teachers who attend three live sessions from five ones.

The course has covered a variety of topics for teachers of English or future teachers of English around the world. Participants are encouraged to join the associated Ning () to participate in discussions, view or download video and other materials from the sessions, and access recordings of the webinars.

As the number of work stations that can access the webinars is limited in Ukraine, we invite all those who are interested in participating in these ELT webinars to register as members of a viewing group at ETRC. We will join the webinars on one of our computers and project the video on a screen so that the participants could get a better view and an opportunity to fully engage with the webinars.

Presenter: Karen Taylor de Caballero, U.S. teacher trainer

In this webinar, participants will learn how to facilitate Readers Theater (RT) and how to use RT as an enriching and productive learning activity in the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom. RT is a group read-aloud in which individuals perform level-appropriate scripts to tell a story cooperatively. Participants will learn how RT supports development of the learner’s external reading voice (rate, vocabulary, and pronunciation/ comprehensibility) as well as their “internal” reading voice (the voice they “hear” when reading silently), thereby strengthening both oral fluency and reading fluency.

a) Presentations/Workshops by Senior English Fellow 2012-2013

Dear Colleagues, we are happy to inform you that this academic year Eve Smith, Senior English Language Fellow, U.S. Department of State, has visited schools and universities giving presentations and conducting seminars on the English Language methodology to teachers of English from Kyiv and outside of Kyiv within the English Language Fellow program.

Eve Smith has conducted teacher training workshops and moderated Discussion clubs at the English Teaching

Resource Center (ETRC), Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. She has also taken part in other teacher training activities throughout Ukraine. Those who would like to invite Eve Smith to their institution to give presentation/presentations (for free) please complete the request form (attached).

Please note that in the end of November, Eve will visit Vinnytsia and will do her outreach training sessions in Vinnytsia oblast through beginning of December from November 25 through December 7. For

the month of December, we expect invitations only from Vinnytsia oblast schools and universities.

From February 17th through February 28th Eve will conduct workshops in Donetsk and Lugansk. We expect

invitations only from this area.

CALSU Symposium "The American Drama in the Contemporary Context: the status, aspects, and modes of poetics" will be held on November, 8 starting at 10 a.m. at the conference room of the Institute of Literature, NASU (4,Hrushevskogo str., of. 316, Kyiv). Prospects for the Future” on November 15-17, 2012

The Belarusian Association of Teachers of English kindly invites you to take part in the 10th International BelNATE-IATEFL conference “English Language Teaching and Area Studies: Prospects for the Future”, which will take place on November 15-17, 2012.

The conference will address various issues connected with the teaching of English in the modern world, the role of information technologies in developing new approaches to ELT and related disciplines and transformations that have taken place in school and university curricula since our last conference in 2010. We hope that the conference will help initiate a fruitful discussion about the ways to improve ELT and area studies in Belarus including the interplay between teaching and learning.

f) Workshop “Methodologies in American Studies” on February 14-17, 2013

Members of the Polish Association for American Studies will offer a series of 3-hour workshop sessions on contemporary methodologies in American studies.

Participants will also have a have a chance to seek advice from panel chairs on problems related to their research projects.

Target group: doctoral students and young scholars with Ph.D.s

in the humanities and social sciences affiliated with universities in Central/Eastern Europe, who are seeking new theoretical approaches and critical tools.

Venue: American Studies Center, Warsaw

Format: 4-day workshop consisting of seven 3-hour sessions, a plenary lecture, and a summing-up session.

The workshop format requires that all participants read the assigned set of materials in advance. Reading materials for each workshop session will be made available online by 1 January, 2012.

Over the course of two days, October 9 - 10, secondary school English language teachers and university instructors met for the hour long presentation exploring the concept of vulnerability as a learner and how it is linked to calculated risk taking in the English language classroom. The presenter drew connections between the accepted train of thought in ESL/EFL of what research means when it says to create a “safe environment” in the classroom and Dr. Brene Brown’s research on Vulnerability and Shame. The idea that teachers can empower students to manage their own learning, reactions to learning and the learning environment was introduced as the concept of Wholehearted learning.

On October 11, students and teachers from the Kyiv community gathered to watch the movie “The Sixth Sense” and hold a discussion. The Senior English Language Fellow, Eve Smith, introduced the movie as an important movie for its time because of the content matter, ghosts and people that see them, and the director’s stylistic choices, as a nod to Hitchcock and his versions of a physiological thriller. The participants really enjoyed the movie and found the idea of someone who can talk to ghosts fascinating. The discussion covered many topics including, belief in ghosts, the senses, cinematography, Ms. Smith’s first impressions of the movie and how it opened up US culture to a series of TV shows on ghosts (i.e. “Ghost Whisperer”) as well as the participant’s impressions of the movie and their expressed desire to show it to their friends.

On October 12, ETRC Discussion Club members met to continue the discussion of how to achieve personal goals by creating visualization boards. The visualization board they worked on is the culmination of the process of goal identification and scheduling. They create posters based on the goals that they would like to see achieved over the next 5 years.  By presenting images or phrases connected with these goals, the participants will have a visual reminder of what they would like to work for and achieve. This visual reminder can be placed in areas at home for inspiration or as a reminder of their goals. The magazines were provided by donation from the generous staff at the Embassy and the participants voiced their appreciation of the volume and quality of magazines.

November is National Novel Writing Month. National Novel Writing Month (also known as NaNoWriMo /ˌnænoʊˈraɪmoʊ/ na-noh-RY-moh) is an annual internet-based creative writing project which challenges participants to write 50,000 words of a new novel between November 1 and 30. Despite its name it accepts entries from around the world. The project started in July 1999 with just 21 participants, but by the 2010 event over 200,000 people took part – writing a total of over 2.8 billion words.

November 2 - All Soul's Day. The Christian holiday of All Soul's Day pays respect and remembers the souls of all friends and loved ones who have died and gone to heaven. It is a time to pray for their souls that they may be received into heaven. Upon death, it is believed that souls have not yet been cleansed of sin. Praying for souls of loved ones helps to remove the stain of sin, and allow the souls to enter the pearly gates of heaven. All Souls Day was started in 998.

November 11- Veterans Day. Veterans Day is an official United States holiday honoring armed service veterans. It is a federal holiday that is observed on November 11. It coincides with other holidays such as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day, which are celebrated in other parts of the world and also mark the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I.

November 12 - Chicken Soup for the Soul Day. It's a celebration about you. November 13- World Kindness Day. World Kindness Day encourages us to be kind to others, helping to create a nicer, better world. According to the World Kindness Movement website, World Kindness Day is intended to "build a kinder and more compassionate world". World Kindness Day evolved from a series of conferences in 1996-1997 in Japan by a group known as the World Kindness Movement. These conferences brought together groups interested in promoting more kindness around the world.  It culminated in the "Declaration of Kindness" on November 13,1997. With this declaration, a new and very special day was born.

Use this day as an opportunity to be kind to family, friends, neighbors, and others. You will find kindness rubs off on others, and generates even more kindness.
