1. Narrative Writing

You may choose either an autobiographical or completely fictional narrative. See the rubric for more specific expectations.

2. Novel Analysis (*see binder of AP prompts )

**This is an assignment that you must do (

After reading The Grapes of Wrath, you’ll answer a prompt (found in the purple binder in the classroom) in the form of a 2-3 page essay. We will discuss this, look at sample papers and scoring, and set one up together.

3. AP Argumentative Essay

This is another type of AP exam writing, so we’ll look at prompts together first, and there are sample essays available on the website. There will be several choices for this essay in the binder with the green cover.

4. Synthesis Essay

**Required

This type of AP exam writing requires you to use information from multiple sources to answer a prompt. In a sense, it’s like a mini research paper, but all the research is done for you. We will practice setting up this type of essay, and you will have several topic choices.

5. Grapes of Wrath Essay. You may choose to write a 2nd essay over this novel. You’ll be given a few choices for possible topics in a few weeks as you begin to finish the novel.

6. (Argumentative) Position Paper

There are two non-fiction articles linked to the class (weebly) website – one is a contemporary piece about cell phones in a California high school. Take a position on the issue raised in the paper. Do you agree with the reasoning behind locking up cell phones? The other option is about later school starts. Do you have a strong, independent position on either of the issues? You will need to explain and thoroughly support your position with either details from your own knowledge/experience or outside research.

7. The Columbus Letter (Persuasive Essay)

We’ll read the Columbus Letter together in class. Your paper should make a case for or against its inclusion in textbooks. Should it be required reading? Is there anything of value in it?

8. Crucible Essay

There will be multiple choices on the website. You may write this essay (at the earliest) after we finish Act One in class.

*All essays should be a minimum of 2 pages in length. I would suggest editing your papers prior to submission.

*If you have questions, see me. I will discuss several of these over the course of 1st Quarter, and will have grade sheets available for each essay at ahoffmanshs..

Helpful hints:

*Make sure you have the correct grading rubric. These are all located on the weebly class website. Print it first, double-check the requirements, and don’t forget to attach it to your essay when you turn it in.

*Read carefully for the location of the prompts – the different types can be easy to confuse.

*Keep track on this sheet when you submit an essay so that you can easily see what you’ve done.
