An Advanced Placement (AP) course is a challenging learning experience that is recognized as highly effective preparation for success in college. A record of AP courses on a student’s transcript is an indication of the student’s commitment to rigorous academics. Typically, successful AP students are:

• Task-oriented

• Proficient readers

• Able to prioritize their time

• Have parental support

The rigorous curriculum requires more effort and homework on the part of the students. The faster pace of the class covers more content in greater depth. Taking the AP exam in the spring is an expectation of enrolling in an AP class.

*Completing summer work is mandatory for student success in AP classes. If a student fails to complete the summer work, the student will not be dropped from the class. Students are not guaranteed to get that teacher that presented the information at the AP summer work meeting and/or the teacher that taught the course the year before. If a student requested to be enrolled in an AP class but has changed their mind, the student must email the AP teacher, the principal, and the student's counselor to drop the course by June 30th.  *Counselors will respond to emails upon their return to school in August.

HONOR CODE:

Individual student integrity is a standard of excellence for Advanced Placement students. All students are expected to do their own work. Each teacher will follow DPS policies and FHS procedures in dealing with any breach of academic integrity.

COMMITMENT CODE:

Students wishing to participate in the above AP courses are expected to make a commitment to complete each course for the whole year. Per the Fordson High School Handbook, “Student schedules will only be changed if the schedule poses a conflict with a district and/or state graduation requirements. Schedules will not be changed for any students unless there is a pre-standing issue that forces the change. Schedules are prepared for students based on the class offerings and times.” Schedules changes will also not occur to honor student preference of teacher.

Email your counselor and the course instructor by June 30th to drop the course from your schedule.
