AP Environmental Science (APES as it is known to many) is designed to be the equivalent of a one-semester, introductory, laboratory-based, college course in Environmental Science. Students will study the interrelationships of the natural world, identify and analyze environmental problems both natural and human-made, and evaluate the relative risks of and possible solutions for these problems. This course is audit approved and follows the guidelines set forth by the AP College Board, designed to prepare interested students for the Advanced Placement Exam given on May 6th, 2019.

Textbook: Freidland, Andrew, and Rick Relyea Environmental Science for AP. 2nd Edition (New York, NY: W.H. Freeman and Company).

Course Expectations:

You Can Expect: A college experience that includes:

• Daily practice in thinking and discussions about material covered

• A (Semi) FAST pace and multi-tasking environment

• A college reading level text

• Projects, labs, student presentations and activities

• Unit tests (that model the AP exam)

You are Expected to Be Here! Research shows that ATTENDANCE is the single most important thing students can do to ensure their own success. However, if your absence is excused, it is your responsibility to make up the class work and obtain the assignments.

✓ First: Check the course webpage () and talk to your classmates about what you missed.

*The communication app “Remind” will be used frequently. You will receive memos on what you missed if you are absent!

✓ Then: See Me after you have checked the above-mentioned list. Please do not expect special help at the start of class unless you have scheduled tutoring beforehand; it is unkind to your classmates and delays the start of class.

✓ You have as many days to make up class work as the number of days you missed this class.

✓ If you miss a test day, plan on taking the make-up test in class the next time you attend class.

✓ If you are absent on the day before a test, plan on taking the test on the regular test day. New material is never taught the day before a test.

You are Expected to Be On Time! In the event that you are have an excused absent for part of the day, it is your responsibility to turn in any and all assignments that are due on that day.

You are Expected to Be Prepared! This means you bring your binder, homework, pen or pencil, and a positive outlook with you EVERYDAY when you come to class. You are taking a unique science class that considers the world you live in today and what it may become tomorrow!! This is a great opportunity for you, take advantage of it!!!

You are Expected to go on Field Trips and possibly go Outside for some Labs! Field trips in this class are NOT EXTRAS. The study of Environmental Science cannot be completed in a classroom. Field trips in this class always include graded labs and activities. Students are responsible to keep up in their other classes so they may attend these field trips. Students who miss field trips will have an additional assignment to make-up for the experiences they missed. **Please dress appropriately for outdoor labs and field trips. Field trips will possibly include a trip to Georgia’s “Little Grand Canyon”, a waste water treatment facility (yum!), the GA Aquarium, and possibly a couple of hiking and caving adventures!

You are Expected to Hand in Original Work! When a student signs his/her name to a paper it signifies their original authorship of the work. Primary sources must be appropriately cited and references must be credited to the original author. Students are encouraged to work together to better understand labs and questions, however, the final paper turned in by each student must be in the original words of each student. Be careful with the Internet: copying and pasting text without citing sources will result in a ZERO grade for the assignment, no questions asked.

What if you “forget” to Turn in your Work? Assignments will be collected at the beginning of class. Late assignments will be accepted and credit will diminish by 20 points every day it is late. Late assignments will NOT be accepted 3 days after it was originally collected.

You are Expected to Keep Safety #1! Not just on lab days. This is our classroom and it is shared with many students. You are expected to respect the room, its contents, and those whom you share this space with, including the classroom pets. Your signature on this form provided to you on the first day of class, is indication of your personal commitment to this expectation.

You are Expected to Earn an “A” Grade! The grading scale is as follows:

100-90%= A 70-79%= C ................
