Course Description

In this course, students learn about the properties of matter and how these properties help to organize elements on the periodic table. Through history, students develop a better understanding of the structure of the atom. Students develop an understanding of chemical reactions including the involvement of energy and sub-atomic particles to better understand the nature of chemical changes. By learning about various chemical reactions, such as oxidation-reduction, combustion, and decomposition, students learn about chemical reactions that occur around us every day. Students also gain a deeper understanding of acids and bases, rates of reactions, and factors that affect those rates. From calculating stoichiometry problems and molar concentrations, students learn about proportionality and strengthen their mathematical skills. We will take a look the basis of the study of chemistry and end with how chemistry influences the world in which we live.

Instructional Strategies

The "flipped classroom" is a protocol where lectures and other activities that normally are presented in a passive environment are performed at home. The homework that requires direction, facilitation, and remediation is then done in the classroom. This reversal is not done for all activities and the videos are not a meant as a substitute for the teacher. The goal for the classroom is to alter the environment to one of learning and assimilating information at the pace of the student rather than an arbitrary schedule.

Criteria for Evaluation

|Category/weight |Components |

|80% Assessment |quizzes and tests |

|15% Scientific communication |lab |

|5% Final |Unit exams and finals |

|0% homework |practice |

|0% other |Record keeping |

After each assessment, students will have the opportunity to earn back 50% of their missed points by completing an optional post-quiz analysis. (mid-term and final test do not apply)

No credit will be given if you use an online source for answers such as Wikipedia. The point is to find out how to use your class resources better in preparing for the final exam. No credit will be assigned if you copy and paste your analyses for each question (“I need to study more” as an answer to all questions). Your analysis will be submitted within I week after we return your quiz to you. You must submit your unaltered exam along with your typed analysis (paperclip them together).

You MAY submit an analysis of the questions you did not receive full credit on for one or multiple quizzes including one or multiple questions. To do so, you will have to analyze your missed points, not just correct them. An analysis must be TYPED, submitted on time, and for each question, consists of:

1. the correct answer

2. where in our class materials (NOT ONLINE) you found the answer

3. how you can avoid missing a similar question on the final exam.

Any lab, or assessment that is never completed will receive a 50% at the end of the course.

Attendance

Assisting students in establishing lifelong habits of reliability and promptness is one of the instructional goals of this particular course. The AMHS attendance and tardy policy will be followed please refer to your student handbook for details.

Classroom Expectations

← STUDY ABOUT ½ - 1 HOUR AT HOME FOR EACH CLASS PERIOD.

← Online video topics for chemistry can be accessed at the following website;

← Be self-motivated and respectful of others.

← Follow all AMHS policies

Scholarly Conduct

Be advised, Mrs Hostetter has the right and responsibility to notify administration about ANY suspected student misconduct. Rather than spell out ALL the ways students have cheated in this and other classes, it is YOUR responsibility to inform yourself of what constitutes academic misconduct – refer to your handbook for details

Typical “oversights” are:

• Copying from a friend with whom you study, OR working so closely with this friend that both your assignments LOOK copied (same words and ideas in the same order).

• Copying whole sentences from a web site without restating in student’s words or without quotation/citation.

• Paraphrasing ideas of another author without attempting to write an “original” sentence and without citation.

Course Outline

|Unit |Topics |

|Unit One |Chemical/physical change, measurement, periodic table trends reasons for bonding of different substances, radioactivity |

|Unit Two |Naming molecules and compounds, Balancing equations and predicting products, net ionic equations, molecular structure |

|Unit Three |Solubility and characteristics of solutions, chemical equilibrium, pH and properties of acids and bases, transfer of heat, gas laws, |

| |chemical calculations using moles |

GENERAL INFORMATION

Classroom courtesy and respect makes for a productive classroom. When someone is speaking in the class, respectful listening is expected. It only follows that cell phones and other electronic devices should not be used during direct instruction in the classroom.
