AP Chemistry Summer Assignment - Broadneck High School

AP Chemistry Summer 2020 Assignment

The summer assignment for AP Chemistry is unfortunately going to have to be a bit more extensive this year. Due to COVID, many of the honors students this year have lost three months of curriculum. With out this summer assignment, we will be behind in an already demanding course. Please take this assignment seriously. The “due dates” are there to help students stay organized but I understand vacations and summer jobs. They are not hard deadlines until school begins. This assignment covers the majority of the first AP unit. Much of it will be review but some of it will also be new.

I have included several resources on google classroom. First, there is a list of the polyatomic ions that you must know. This is not a necessity until a few units in but, studies show that starting to memorize a little each day will help. I have also included the AP chemistry Equation sheet. This has all the equations and periodic tables that students can use on the AP test. They periodic table does not have labels of the element’s names, just their symbols. Most of the elements we use in AP chem are the well-known ones, but they do through curveballs every now and then.

To help students through this, I have set up a google classroom for this year’s upcoming students. Here, you will find the assigned worksheets, by topic, along with PowerPoints, notes and videos. I will also hold a google meet once a week on Wednesdays starting July 15 until school begins at 1:00 – 2:00. This is a great time for them to stop in, ask questions or just to get to know me before the school year begins. With the future being so unknown, this is an awesome opportunity to get ahead.

“Due Dates” – this is just for organizational purposes for students who need more of a schedule. I will warn that many students will try to complete this the week before school starts and they will most likely be really stressed out trying to finish it all. If students would like to submit work electronically on google classroom, they absolutely can so the can “check things off” as they go.

The summer assignment will be due around the 4th class period and their first unit test by the 6th or 7th class. This is obviously tentative depending on how the school system determines we are running things come September.

I look forward to connecting with you all at the beginning of the next school year. If you need to contact me during the summer, you can email me and I will get back to you as quickly as I can.

Best of luck to you all,
