Course Description/Objective: AP Chemistry Course Description (from College Board)

"The AP Chemistry course is designed to be the equivalent of the general chemistry course usually taken during the first college year. For some students, this course enables them to undertake, in their freshman year, second-year work in the chemistry sequence at their institution or to register in courses in other fields where general chemistry is a prerequisite. For other students, the AP chemistry course fulfills the laboratory science requirement and frees time for other courses.

AP Chemistry should meet the objectives of a good general chemistry course. Students in such a course should attain a depth of understanding of fundamentals and a reasonable competence in dealing with chemical problems. The course should contribute to the development of the students’ abilities to think clearly and to express their ideas, orally and in writing, with clarity and logic. The college course in general chemistry differs qualitatively from the usual secondary school course in chemistry with respect to the kind of textbook used, the topics covered, the emphasis on chemical calculations and the mathematic formulation of principles, and the kind of laboratory work done by students. Quantitative differences appear in the number of topics treated, the time spent on the course by students and the nature and variety of experiments done in the laboratory.

***Important Notice***

This year Mansfield ISD is requiring students to pay a fee for AP tests as follows:

Each exam – regular cost $25

Each exam – reduced cost $12

All additional fees will be payed by the student

Late Fee-$45

Unused exam-$15

In addition, all students are automatically registered for the AP Test for any AP class in which they are enrolled. If a student does NOT wish to take an AP test for a given class, they must complete an Opt Out form by October 15.

Materials

1. Scientific Calculator, must be able to perform logarithmic functions

2. Spiral Notebook for Class Notes or 3 Ring Binder Used for Other classes

3. Bound composition notebook for Labs

Academic Dishonesty/Cheating/Plagiarism

Academic dishonesty—cheating or plagiarism—is not acceptable. Cheating includes the copying of another student’s work—homework, class work, test answers, etc.—as one’s own. Plagiarism is the use of another person’s original ideas or writing without giving credit to the true author. A student found to have engaged in academic dishonesty will be subject to loss of credit for the work in question, as well as disciplinary penalties, according to the Student Code of Conduct. Respect yourself and do your own work.

Lab Safety

Safety is a major factor in every lab experiment. Safety infractions could result in the loss of the learning opportunity for that day. Furthermore, should safety be compromised, the teacher has the option of giving that student a “0” as a grade for that experiment. All students must have a signed safety contract on file with the teacher and score 100% on a safety test before being allowed to perform any labs.

Grading (Mansfield ISD policy)

Tests & Projects 50%

Labs 30%

Daily Work/Homework/Quizzes 20%

The final exam for each semester will be worth 20% of that semester’s grade.

Benchmark Tests: There will be two cumulative district benchmark tests, the first in early November, the second sometime after the end of the 4th six weeks. These will count as test grades

Retakes for tests If a student fails a major test/assessment (below 70%) they may retake or redo the test one time, within the six weeks grading period, for a grade of up to a 70%.

Students have to make arrangements with the teacher to retake or redo a major test after school.

All retakes must be completed prior to the end of each six week grading period.

Students must attend at least one tutorial before retaking the test.

Late Work Late assignments will be accepted up to three days after the original due date.

Each class day the assignment is late the grade will be reduced by 15 points.

After three days, the grade will be reduced to a zero.

All assignments must be completed prior to the end of each six week grading period

Make-up Policy - Student responsibility (from student handbook)

“Students with excused absences will have the total number of days associated with the absence from school plus one day to turn in make-up work. Parents may call on the second day of an absence to request make-up work. Please allow 24 hours before picking up make-up assignments. It is the student’s responsibility to obtain make-up work!”

If you are absent on the day of a test, you must be prepared to take the test the next day you are in class. All test dates will be announced 1-2 weeks in advance. Being absent the class period before the test does not excuse you from taking the test.

Classroom Rules

1. Be on time. Please be in your seat when the bell rings.

2. Bring the proper supplies: textbook, notebook, calculator, pencil.

3. Respect other people’s rights and property.

4. Come to class prepared by doing your homework/having studied for your test.

5. No food or drink of any kind in the lab area.

Please refer to the Student handbook for more information on student behavior and requirements
