Pre-AP Chemistry Course Outline 2010-2011Ms. McLeod, Pleasant Grove High SchoolClassroom 223, Lab 219Course Goals:For each student to achieve the defined Alabama State Standards for High School Chemistry. To prepare students of college ability for further study in chemistry and at the same time to present material of use in daily life.To prepare students for AP Chemistry next year.To encourage the spirit of scientific investigation and with it the attitudes of accuracy in thought and work.Course Organization:This course is organized into several units based on the ACOS for Chemistry and Laying the Foundation exercises to prepare for AP Chemistry.Unit 1- The Nature of Chemistry:Measurement and Calculations; Chemistry Basics; Lab Equipment and Lab SafetyUnit 2 – Atomic Structure:Atoms- The building blocks of Matter; Nuclear ChemistryUnit 3- Bonding and Molecular structure:Chemical Bonding; Structure of Covalent Molecules, Salts, and MetalsUnit 4 – Chemical NomenclatureNaming Chemical Compounds: Organic, Ionic, Covalent, Binary, and Acids; assigning oxidation numbers; memorization of common ionsUnit 5 – Conservation of MatterChemical Reactions and EquationsUnit 6 – StoichiometryThe relationship among number of particles, moles, and masses of reactants and products in a chemical reactionUnit 7 – States of MatterPhysical characteristics of solids, liquids, and gases, Gas Laws, & Molecular Composition of gasesUnit 8 – SolutionsProperties of Solutions, Concentrations, Solubility Curves, Electrolytes, & Lab applicationsUnit 9 – KineticsThe study of the rates of reactionsUnit 10 - Acids and Bases/EquilibriumAcids and Bases, Titrations, pHUnit 11 – ThermodynamicsCalculations of latent heat and specific heat, reaction energyUnit 12 – Organic, Biochemistry, Electrochemistry May be covered depending on amount of time remaining at the end of the 2nd semesterGrading:Tests/Quizzes50%Objective Assessments:20%Labs/lab reports:20%Homework/Class work:10%Student achievement of the above listed standards will be primarily assessed through objective assessments (benchmark quizzes); these assessments are based directly on the Alabama Course of Study for Chemistry. Students need to achieve a grade of 70% or higher on the Objective Assessments; therefore, all students will be able to retake an objective assessment as many times as necessary until the end of the following unit. At that time the grade will be recorded. Assessment retakes can be retaken the last 10 minutes of class, except exam days, it is up to the student to keep up with their objective assessment grades on a log sheet. If additional assistance is needed in preparing for the assessment the students need to utilize the last 10 minutes of each class or see me after school. All assignments are listed on the class calendar; assignments are EXPECTED to be completed by the next class meeting. Homework, worksheets, and other problems will be assembled and turned in at the end of the unit on test day. Work needs to be turned in, in chronological order by date assigned. Keep up with your work in a specifically designated area in your binder.Attendance: It is YOUR responsibility to find out what your assignments are when you miss school. If you know in advance you should get with me so I may give you any assignments in advance (if possible). If it is a situation where you do not know in advance you need to immediately consult the homework folder upon returning to school; additionally, it would be great if you could contact another student in our class to see what your assignment is. Honesty: Plagiarizing and copying assignments (INCLUDING labs and homework), or cheating on tests and quizzes will NOT be tolerated. All work is to be done individually. Failure to do so will result in a parent conference and a grade of ZERO for ALL individuals involved. The cheator and the cheatee are equally at fault in a cheating situation.Materials for Class:3-ring binder with paperPens, Pencils, ErasersCalculator: Scientific calculator is necessary for class, a Graphing Calculator is not required but it will be very useful for certain units; however, it is required in precalculus and calculus classes so if you are planning on taking one of those classes then you might as well go ahead and get a TI-84 or better.1 set of index cards for making flash cards. (This is important!)Your Textbook (bring it with you to class and take it home! Read it!) ................
