AP CHEMISTRY SUMMER WORK - Notre dame Chemistry

AP CHEMISTRY SUMMER WORK

There will be a quiz over the formulas and equations and memory work during the first week of school of school. FAILURE TO COMPLETE THE SUMMER ASSIGNMENT WILL RESULT IN REMOVAL FROM THE COURSE

In AP chem, you do not have the Periodic Table of ions. You must be able to write formulas of binary compounds, acids, and compounds with polyatomic ions by knowing the group number and what has been previously memorized. This summer assignment is designed to get you to the place where you can do this. Please: DON’T WAIT UNTIL THE LAST WEEK OF SUMMER VACATION TO TRY TO LEARN ALL OF THIS.

I. Formulas & Equations

Use the link on the website: notredamechemistry. to obtain information and the answer sheet.

The worksheets are due on the first day of school.

USE THE ANSWER SHEET!!!.

Chapter 3: Exercise 3-1, 3-2, 3-3. Memorize the oxidation numbers of representative elements on p. 13 and the starred cations with variable oxidation numbers on p. 14 and the starred polyatomic ions on p. 16.

Chapter 4: Exercise 4-1, 4-2, 4-3. Memorize the strong acids and strong bases.

Chapter 8: Exercise 8-1.

Chapter 9: Exercise 9-1, 9-2. Memorize the solubility rules table on p. 48 and common gases from metathesis reactions p. 50

II. Memory Work

In addition to what is listed above, make sure you know:

STRONG ACIDS: HCl (hydrochloric), HBr (hydrobromic), HI (hydroiodic), HNO3 (nitric), HClO3 (chloric), HClO4 (perchloric), H2SO4 (sulfuric)

STRONG BASES: all hydroxides of alkali metals and alkaline earth metals except beryllium and magnesium.

SEVEN NATURAL DIATOMIC MOLECULES

ELEMENT SYMBOLS: be able to identify all the elements on the main section of the periodic table by seeing only the symbol, atomic number, and atomic mass. Rare earth elements are not often used and will not be required. I've attached a copy of a periodic table without names. This will be what is used on all quizzes and tests.
