Course Description: This is an advanced placement course designed to prepare the student for the AP Chemistry exam. The course covers the equivalent of one full year of college level General Chemistry, comparable to a first year course at a college or university. The course is a rigorous math-based course, with a strong laboratory component. It is intended for students who have demonstrated a willingness to commit considerable time to studying and completing assignments outside of class, and who have successfully completed a prior course in chemistry during high school.

The course will develop the student's ability to incorporate mathematical skills in the solution of chemistry problems, both through the use of textbook problems and laboratory activities. Since the AP exam no longer allows the use of calculators, significant emphasis will be placed on developing the student's ability to solve problems through dimensional analysis and estimation. Students will be required to keep a thorough and accurate ongoing laboratory notebook.

Since passing the AP exam may qualify the student to by-pass a first-year college chemistry course, AP Chemistry should not be considered "college prep." Rather, this is a college class, with college level expectations for behavior, participation and effort.

REQUIRED materials: Scientific Calculator (must have LOG key), A large 3-ring binder for notes and handouts plus a separate notebook for labs only.

Classroom Procedures:

1. Be on time and be prepared.

2. Homework will be collected periodically. It is your responsibility to do all assigned homework.

3. Homework that will be collected is due at the beginning of class or it is late

4. Any tests, labs or assignments that were missed due to an excused absence must be made up within 1 week of the students return. Failure to comply will result in a zero. It is the responsibility of the student to get any work missed and schedule times to make up labs and tests.

5. Tests will always be announced. Quizzes can and will occur at any time.

6. If you need extra help PLEASE see me. I will be here by 6:45 every morning and I can stay after school on most days.
