Course Title: AP Microeconomics

San Marin High School AP Macroeconomics

Mr. Spinrad

Course Description: Macroeconomics is concerned with the economy as a whole – the aggregates of the household, business and government sectors – and with measures of the total economy. The curriculum is based on AP Board Macroeconomics standards. The course satisfies the San Marin High School economics graduation requirement. Please bookmark Spinrad. We will use this source frequently.

Text: Economics by Campbell McConnell and Stanley Brue, 17th edition McGraw-Hill Irwin. 2008

Supplemental Materials: Economics by Example by David A. Anderson, 4th ed., 2007 Worth Publishers, NY. PowerPoints and videos on Spinrad.

Course Objectives: The course will include lecture, demonstration, discussion and research. Thorough reading of assigned material in the text is essential as you are expected to know information for tests that will not necessarily be covered in class. (This will be true in many college classes, too.) The themes are:

• Basic Economic Concepts

• Measurement of Economic Performance

• Aggregate Demand and Aggregate Supply Models

• Fiscal Policy

• Banking and Monetary Policy

• International Economics

Progress Reporting and Grading: Grades are reported at the end of each progress-reporting period for all students. Progress reports will be mailed home and/or accessible to parents online approximately every five or six weeks. Whenever a student falls below the grade of C minus after the second progress report for either semester, I will arrange a conference with the student’s parent/guardian and/or send a written report. (Board Policy 5121)

Student grades are based on performance on tests and papers, presentations, homework and problem sets. I grade on a point scale. Tests and papers comprise 90 percent of the grade. Each assignment, unit and the final grade will be based on the following scale:

90 – 100% = A

80. – 89% = B

65 – 79% = C

55 – 65% = D

0 – 55% = F

Notice that the requirements to pass are quite generous. If you are absent for a test you must make it up at lunchtime or after school; usually the day you return.

AP Exam: It is expected that students will take the AP exam in May. Registration for the exam begins in March. I will conduct optional review sessions in April.

Behavior and Tardies: I will enforce school rules. No hats, no food, no gum, no cell phones. Tardy students will have a conversation with me.

Homework: Students are expected to do the textbook reading and watch required videos and PowerPoints before we cover the material in class.
