TRANSPORTATION LOGISTICAL SUPPORT PATHWAY

The transportation industry is vital to the economy. Modes of ground transportation used to move both freight and passengers are ground, rail and water. The transportation industry is very global in nature and the increased adoption of new technologies that allow time-specific delivery and electronic tracking of cargo have spurred its growth.

The transportation industry offers a variety of jobs to qualified job seekers. Transportation support jobs include mechanics, service people, parts specialists and collision repairers. Rail transportation support jobs include yardmasters, railroad conductors, and rail yard engineers. Water transportation jobs include ship engineers, deck officers and marine oilers.

Presently students who complete the support pathway have an end of course test provided by National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (). This test establishes student competence and validates the training provided by the secondary school. All completers of NATEF certified programs can affix the NATEF seal to their diploma. Neither Automotive Youth Educational Systems (AYES) nor NATEF can certify students until they have completed two years of verified work as an Automotive Technician, Collision Repair or HD Truck. ASE () is the national certifying body for automotive. AYES schools have the same benefit and add the AYES seal to diplomas of qualified students that have completed an internship. AYES () pays for the NATEF end of course exam.

Employment for transportation support jobs are expected to be good. Most support jobs require on-the-job training; some require certification. Those seeking to move into management should have some type of post-secondary training.
