While taking notes

➢ Use the TQLR Technique:

o Tune In – Listen and look at the teacher. Body language can give you clues!

o Question – Asking good questions helps you participate in class and keeps class interesting!

o Listen – Be alert for cue words and emphasis on certain points

o Review – Glance back during note-taking to make sure you understand the topics!

➢ Don’t try for a verbatim transcript – record the main ideas and some supporting details, feel free to paraphrase the lecture!

➢ Use cues to help you with key points – star or underline key terms and phrases

➢ Skip lines so you can add in details later when you compare notes with a buddy

➢ Use symbols and abbreviations such as & or w/ or b/c to prevent getting bogged down

➢ Write legibly the first time – doing it right the first time prevents wasting time later to redo it!

➢ If you find your attention wandering, then stand up and move to the back wall with your notebook so you can still take notes. Sometimes you need to stimulate the mind by physically moving. Just be careful to not disturb others!!

➢ Use an outline (Roman numerals, headings, etc) to help your organize your thinking.

➢ Work all examples with your study partner!!!!

After taking notes

➢ Review your notes with 24 hours to move the information from short-term memory to long-term memory!

➢ Add to your notes to write major topics, key terms, and questions in the left-hand column. Use this column for studying and self-quizzing, just as with the textbook notes.

➢ Compare your notes with your study group to clarify any unclear points, fill in missing information, etc.

➢ For some students, recopying their notes is a good method of review

➢ Once a week, review all of the notes from the week (about 30 minutes total review).

➢ Use your notes to write a summary of the chapter for later review.
