AP Classroom: We will utilize the AP classroom online resources this semester. In order to access this you will need to login to AP Central and use the code 7NZJ3Y. Please do this as soon as possible.

Textbook:

Yates, Daniel S., Moore, David S. and Starnes, Darren S. (2003). The Practice of Statistics. W.H. Freeman and Company. 2nd Edition.

Goals:

AP Statistics is the equivalent to a one semester, introductory, non-calculus based, college course in statistics. This course will introduce participants to the major concepts and tools for collecting, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from data. Participants are exposed to four broad conceptual themes:

1) Exploring Data: Observing patterns and departures from patterns.

2) Sampling and Experimentation: Deciding what and how to measure.

3) Anticipating Patterns: Producing models using probability and

simulation.

4) Statistical Inference: Confirming models.

Schedule of Topics

Chapters 1 through 14 will be covered. Students will be given the opportunity to prepare for the AP exam with extra review sessions in the spring. There will be small projects assigned to familiarize students with the process of designing and carrying out a project. Remember that this is a tentative schedule. Time will also be used to provide students training in the use of the statistics software on the TI-84 graphics calculator.

**Special Requirements:

Every student is expected to read the material prior to the class meeting. Assignments will be made from the text and other sources and will be checked for completeness as well as accuracy. It is essential that these assignments be completed to gain a thorough understanding of the material.

It is the responsibility of each student to meet deadlines. Failure to meet a deadline results in a penalty of 10 points off for each day the assignment is turned in late. Four to ten days late will be a 40 point deduction. After 10 days, the assignment will no longer be accepted. It is also expected that every student participate in class. Asking questions until understanding is reached is an integral part of the learning process.

Student Expectation

• Students are expected to complete all homework and class assignments.

• Students are expected to actively participate in class activities and discussions.

• All students are expected to take the AP Exam, which will be May 15, 2020. All students must register to take the AP Exam by February 28th.

Class Expectations

Be on time.

▪ Have a study group so that you can check on assignments and understanding.

▪ Be respectful of yourself and others. Disrespect is not tolerated.

▪ Avoid frequent absences. Students who are absent are responsible for getting and handing in any makeup work.

Tips on How to Succeed in this Class:

✓ Ask questions!

✓ Be an active participant in class discussions.

✓ Do assigned problems before class and be prepared with questions.

✓ Read the textbook!

✓ Watch the videos!

✓ Take care of make-up work promptly.

✓ Show Ms. Beale rough drafts of special problems or projects.

✓ Have a network of Stats students to help and be helped by.

This is a college-level course and will be conducted as such. Students are expected to be highly motivated and those who are can expect to experience success. Students are encouraged to come see me before school, after school, or during H.O.T. Lunch to discuss topics for which they need clarification.

Grading:

Homework - 10%

Quizzes – 30%

Tests and Projects - 60%

Grade Recovery Opportunities:

All tests are cumulative. Therefore a Unit test grade may be replaced by the following Unit’s test grade if you improved upon your grade.

Procedure for Make-up Tests and Quizzes

Make up tests and quizzes must be made up within 2 tutorials of the missed test or quiz. For example, if you missed a quiz given on Wednesday, then you must take the make-up quiz on the following Thursday or Tuesday tutorial.

Textbook Policy:

Every student will be assigned a textbook. Students are responsible for their assigned textbook. Students are not allowed to write in their textbooks, nor are they allowed to tear or otherwise damage the cover or pages of their textbooks.

Students will have one day to make up assignments for absences 1 – 3. Students have 2 days to make up work for every day absent if they are absent more than 3 days.

Senior Exam Exemption Policy:

o 3 or fewer absences with an A average

o 2 or fewer absences with a B average

o 1 or fewer absences with a C average

o 5 tardies will count as 1 absence toward exemptions.

Recommended Materials:

▪ TI-83 or -84 Plus graphing calculator preferred –Every student must have access to a graphing calculator for classwork and homework. If a student cannot purchase a calculator, he/she may borrow one for in class use only. Any calculator that is lost or damaged will result in a minimum charge of $120
