While considering the psychologists and studies that have shaped the field, students explore and apply psychological theories, key concepts, and phenomena associated with such topics as the biological bases of behavior, sensation and perception, learning and cognition, motivation, developmental psychology, testing and individual differences, treatments of psychological disorders, and social psychology. Throughout the course, students employ psychological research methods, including ethical considerations, as they use the scientific method, evaluate claims and evidence, and effectively communicate ideas.Course Outline: This schedule may change depending on the system of learning being used (Distance, Hybrid, Full in Person). You are expected to partake in homework if you want to succeed. Homework will consist of a variety of assignments including: listening to podcasts, responding to articles and texts, annotation the textbook, and handouts. Homework will be announced at the beginning of class. Students are expected to keep a planner to track dates. Completing HW assignments will help cushion your grade. Classroom Procedures: An average day in class will consist of most of the following with some variation:Opening Question – Most days we will begin class with a warm up question. Answers will be full sentences.Lecture/Notes – Content will be supplemented or summarized with lecture. You are required to take notes.In Class Activities – Lecture will be followed by a variety of activities. (Ex. handouts, group work)Assessments – We will occasionally have FRQ quizzes. There will be a test at the end of every unit. Usually on Fridays. Participation – Participation is required in this class. It has its own grading category. Closing Question – Most days we will end class with a closing question, also in full sentences.Classroom Behavior & Expectations:Be Prepared – Bring a writing utensil and paper to class. Take care business before class starts. Plagiarism – Do not copy someone else’s work and turn it in as your own. You and your accomplice will receive zeros.Be Prompt – Be in class, in your seat, ready to work when the bell rings. A tardy is only excused with a valid note. Be Positive – “I can’t” is not an excuse for laziness. Do your work and try your best. I will recognize that. Be Polite – Always be respectful, polite, helpful & honest with your peers, with me and any classroom guests. I will respect you, and I expect that respect to be given to me. When I am talking, you are not. When you are talking others are not. Slurs of any kind will not be tolerated. This is your one warning. Slurs will result in a citation and trip to the office.Be Productive –Do not add to the homework load you already have. We do not have the time for anyone to be off task. Finish classwork in the given time. If you use your time wisely, you will be able to finish your work. No late classwork accepted.Always Ask – Do not hesitate to ask me questions if you need help. That’s what I’m here for.Food or Drink – This is a privilege not a right. If the room is kept clean and trash is thrown away, food is allowed. Cell Phones/Electronics – Should be kept away for a majority of the time. Bathroom Use – School policy of two passes per semester. We Are All Human – Everyone has good and bad days, myself included. Everyone makes mistakes. Attendance:For Distance Learning: In order to be successful in the class, you must attend live Zoom sessions in the morning, as well as complete the asynchronous time assignments. In order to receive attendance credit for asynchronous assignments, you must have a sufficient portion of the assignment turned in on Google Classroom by 3pm on the day it was assigned.It is imperative to attend class on a daily basis. Missing too many days will result in an unsatisfactory grade. When a student is absent it is their responsibility to return and talk to the teacher about any missing work. You will have as many days to work on make-up assignments as the amount of excused days absent. If a student is absent on an assessment day, and that absence is not excused, they will not be able to retake the assessment. Grading Policy: I want nothing more than to see all of my students succeed. Students with D’s or F’s may ask for additional tutoring during asynchronous time in order to help their grade. If you come to me at the end of the semester, without having shown me effort or willingness to do better in the class, I will be unable to help you. I have attached a list of films we will potentially be watching in class this year. The list includes the movie rating and a description for why it received that rating. If you do not want your student watching the following films, do not sign the slip below.
