*Note that to achieve the analysis point, you must compare change over time with the starting point/year from the prompt. Within each body paragraph, you should address the starting point for that topic just after your topic sentence. The rest of your paragraph should address changes and continuities from the starting point to the ending point, as well as relevant world historical context.

*The unit introductions in your textbook are great overviews to help prepare for this essay.

West Africa

South Asia

Europe

When you write a CCOT essay thesis, make sure you complete the following tasks:

1) In your thesis include the dates or time period.

For example: “Between 1000 and 1750 C.E. . . . “

2. Include the region or country (or other topic from prompt) you chose.

Example: “Between 1000 and 1750 C.E. Islam impacted West Africa . . . “

3. Tell what changed and what stayed the same using the categories stated in the prompt. Example Thesis: economic

Between 1000 and 1750 C.E. Islam entered West Africa and increased its trade and political → centralized its politics, but many aspects of African religion and gender roles remained unchanged. ↑

cultural

Other strategies

• This essay will probably allow some choices: e.g. pick 2 of the following 3 countries, religions, etc.

• The topics on the CCOT essay tend to be global such as technology, trade, demographics or culture (think G-SPRITE!).

• You must discuss both continuities and changes over time: contrast change over time with starting point and discuss what stayed the same.

o Discuss how things were prior to the change near the beginning of each body paragraph.

o Do not jump from the starting point to the ending point in your essay. Rather, describe/analyze what was happening throughout this era too.

o Discuss causes or events that caused changes.

• To achieve the relevant world historical context point, discuss historical developments beyond the region(s) in the prompt that contributed to changes or continuities discussed in your essay.
