AP WORLD HISTORY: MODERN 1200-PRESENT10TH Grade Lemon Bay High School2201 Placida Rd, Englewood, FL 34224941-474-7702bert.cass@COURSE DESCRIPTION: Your AP World History course attempts, “…to develop greater understanding of the evolution of global processes and contacts in different types of human societies. This understanding is advanced through a combination of selective factual knowledge and appropriate analytical skills” (AP College Board). Your course begins during the year 1200 and ends in the present era. When students leave this class, they should recognize that they did not learn dates, events, and names but instead, they should appreciate the connections and similarities between time periods and events of the past to present-day occurrences and beliefs they learned. This appreciation and increased content knowledge will enable students to analyze the possible “how’s” and “why’s” of historical global events of the past to today’s global events. Paul Lay, current editor of the publication History Today in England, describes history and a history class as such, “History is now one of the very few GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) exams where pupils are faced with a blank sheet of paper and asked to write down their interpretation of the events that they have studied. In other words, pupils who study history learn to think for themselves.” COURSE EXPECTATIONS:Your willingness to critically think about past events and ideas as well as analyze, compare, and contrast primary and secondary sources while linking events of the past with events, peoples/nations, cultural landscapes, and global connections of today, in writing, is essential for success in this class. Your ability to accept constructive instruction (not criticism), is essential. Very few students will be writing on a high level at first, but through practice, everyone will improve. Please notice the bolded phrase “in writing” above. Yes, this is a history class, but may seem like an English class at times. Writing concisely at times and lengthy at other times, writing with historical accuracy, writing in an organized fashion as you would for a long or short essay including supporting evidence, and writing clear thesis statements which offer your argument IS ESSENTIAL for success.COURSE AT A GLANCE:Unit 0 – History of the World in 2 Hours – Documentary viewingBeginnings of civilizations, agriculture, trade and connections between Asia, Middle East, and Europe (early form of Globalization), rise of empires, spread of major religionsUnit 1 – Global Tapestry: 1200 – 1450Unit 2 – Networks of Exchange: 1200 – 1450Unit 3 – Land Based Empires: 1450 – 1700Unit 4 – Transoceanic Interconnections: 1450 – 1750Unit 5 – Revolutions: 1750 – 1900 Unit 6 – Consequences of Industrialization: 1750 – 1900 Unit 7 – Global Conflict: 1900 to the presentUnit 8 – Cold War and Decolonization: 1900 to the presentUnit 9 – Globalization: 1900 to the presentCLASS MATERIALS: A large (2 inch minimum) three-ring binder filled with loose leaf (for note taking) and 9 dividers (one per unit) – NOT a spiral notebook – is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Please supply yourself with pens and pencils.Notebook/Binder: This binder will provide a study resource for readings and class/lecture notes, provide an organizational strategy, and act as a directory of sorts for everything you complete in this class. This “binder” should not be your science, math, English, and history notebook – just history.NOTE: You will be allowed to utilize your binder during practice DBQs (Document-Based Questions) and LEQs (Long-Essay Question), therefore, acquiring the binder before the end of the first week of school is imperative. PENS (black or blue only) are required. Why? You will be required to write in pen during your College Board exam, therefore writing in pen while practicing in class is vital. You may take notes in pencil, but ALL practice, unit test, and mock exam writing will be performed in pen.TEXTBOOK: Supplied: AMSCO – Advanced Placement Edition World History: Modern (1200 – Present) SUPPLEMENTAL RESOURCES: PowerPoint presentations, short documentaries, YouTube clips, and supplemental readings.GRADING: 100-90 = A, 89-80 = B, 79-70 = C, 69-60 = D, Below 60 = FGrades in this class will consist primarily of tests/quizzes, projects, and presentations. I expect them to know they have moved on to a higher academic and personal stage in their lives. I expect my students to know how to act in a classroom setting, how to interact with me and their classmates, to respect LBHS and its staff/faculty, and above all – respect themselves. Finally, I expect my students to understand and appreciate the opportunity they have been given for academic and personal success by attending these college-level classes at LBHS. We define plagiarism as “using someone else’s words, ideas or images without giving proper credit or any credit at all to the original writer or artist.” Whether plagiarism is intentional or unintentional, it is a serious offense, and ignorance of the LBHS plagiarism policy is not an acceptable defense against the charge of plagiarism. COLLEGE BOARD EXAM REVIEW and GRADE OPPORTUNITYAlthough students will prepare for the College Board exam throughout the year, there is no way to simulate a full 3-hour exam without conducting one or two. Therefore, a few weeks prior to the exam, students will be required to participate in at least 1 full mock exam on two assigned Saturdays. Thus, students will be required to attend ONE of TWO opportunities to practice a full exam and a 50-point assignment will be logged in FOCUS. NOTE 1: Students who complete ONE of TWO mock exams will receive a 50/50 for the assignment plus whatever score received on the exam (0-5) for a maximum of 55/50. NOTE 2: Students who do not attend either of the two opportunities will receive a 0/50 for the assignment.FINAL EXAM!Over the course of the year you will have worked extremely hard and just completed a College Board exam. Therefore, your final exam will be in the form of a project in which you can apply and demonstrate what you’ve learned in a variety of ways that I hope will be fun for all.IMPORTANT NOTE and CONTRACTPlease read my message below, sign, and return by for 2 bonus points. Points will NOT be granted after, but all expectations and policies will be upheld. If you, or your parent, have any questions regarding the expectations of the class, please feel free to contact me at the email address in the syllabus heading.Your willingness to accept constructive instruction that is intended to help you improve is important to your success in this class. Don’t take constructive criticism personally; we at LBHS want everyone to be successful, but more importantly improve throughout the year. In order to achieve success, please try the following: have a positive attitude, have pride in your work, have high standards and high expectations, give forth effort and have GRIT, have consistency and organization in your life, have respect for yourself and for others, and ask yourself often: Did I do my best; did I do all I could have done? Lastly, have confidence. Success is addictive – like your cell phone! The more you succeed, the more your brain reacts positively to that feeling of success. Your brain will train itself to want the feeling of success repeatedly. *****************************************************************************Please sign that you and your parents have read and understand the expectations and the information listed within the class syllabus.
