APA Intext Citations:

Intext citations state the source information. There are two main types of intext citations:

1. Parenthetical Citation: The citation appears at the end of the sentence. Deliberate plagiarism is considered a serious violation (Smith & Jones, 2014).

2. Narrative Citation: The citation is part of the grammatical sentence. As Reed (2009) has shown, plagiarism is a serious issue for universities.

Examples of Intext Citations

1. One author a) The author claims that plagiarism has become a bigger issue (Smith, 2014). b) As Smith (2014) has shown, plagiarism is a serious issue for universities. c) In 2014, Smith found that plagiarism is becoming increasingly widespread.

2. Two authors a) The authors claim plagiarism has become a bigger issue (Smith & Jones, 2014). b) As Smith and Jones (2014) have shown, plagiarism is a serious issue for universities. c) In 2014, Smith and Jones found that plagiarism is becoming increasingly widespread.

3. 4. Direct quotations: Direct quotes need quotation marks and page numbers where known. a) The author claims that "plagiarism has become a bigger issue" (Smith, 2014, p. 170). b) As Smith (2014) has shown, "plagiarism has become a bigger issue" (p. 170).

Examples of Intext Citations

6. Citing Multiple Works When citing multiple works, place citations in alphabetical order, separated with semicolon(s).

Parenthetical Citation: (Markle, 2020; Murdaugh et al., 2019) Narrative Citation: Markle (2020) and Murdaugh et al. (2019) show...

7. Citing Secondary Sources

In research, you will often find resources where an author refers to another researcher's

work known as a 'secondary source' and is referenced in a particular way. For example, in

a work by Lyon et al. (2014) the author cites Rabbitt (1982).

[secondary]

[primary]

Cite Rabbitt as the primary source, followed by Lyon et al. as the secondary source. However, only Lyon et al. will appear on your reference page.

Parenthetical Citation: (Rabbitt, 1982, as cited in Lyon et al., 2014) Narrative Citation: Rabbit (1982) as cited in Lyon et al. (2014) indicates...

Reference Page:

The reference page lists all the references that you cited in your assignment alphabetized by author's last name or organization name.
