APA Citation Style
Modern Language Association (MLA) Citation Style
Format for Citing Journal Articles Retrieved from Library Databases
According to the most recent (7th) edition of the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers (2009), articles from online databases (such as JSTOR, Project Muse, and EBSCOhost databases like Academic Search Premier, Historical Abstracts, etc.) should be cited as if they were print journal articles. The citation, however, should also include the name of the database (italicized), the medium of publication (Web), and the date the article was accessed through the database. The general format is as follows:
Author(s). "Title of Article." Title of Journal Volume.Issue (Year): page range. Name of Database. Medium of publication. Date of access.
The following examples demonstrate MLA citation style for journal articles retrieved from databases:
Bhavnani, Ravi, and David Backer. “Localized Ethnic Conflict and Genocide: Accounting for Differences in Rwanda and Burundi.” Journal of Conflict Resolution 44.3 (2000): 283-306. JSTOR. Web. 25 Feb. 2012.
Gibson, Stacey. “The Role of Structure and Institutions in the Genocide of the Rwandan Tutsi and the Armenians of the Ottoman Empire.” Journal of Genocide Research 5.4 (2003): 503-522. Academic Search Premier. Web. 25 Feb. 2012.
