APA Format for High School and Collegiate Students Why do I have to document the information and ideas I have included in my work? What is the APA format? The APA format allows readers to check your sources easily and it gives you credibility as a writer. In addition, this documentation format protects you from plagiarism. APA stands for the American Psychological Association and is the documentation method most commonly used for research papers and in science and social science courses. What is Plagiarism? Plagiarism is academic dishonesty and it occurs whenever you take someone else’s creations, their words OR ideas OR visuals, and attempt to pass them off as your own. You must always properly record your sources of information in essays, research reports, and PowerPoint slide shows. Documenting Sources Requires Two Parts: An intext citation gives brief information that allows the reader to cross-reference to a reference page at the end of your work.2. A reference page lists all of the sources you have used and cited in your work and provides a list of every source that you make reference to in your essay. It also provides the information necessary for a reader to locate and retrieve any sources cited in your essay. Each retrievable source cited in the essay must appear on the reference page, and vice versa. What does a reference page include? Book or Textbook:Shay, J. (1994). Achilles in Vietnam: Combat trauma and the undoing of character. New York: Touchstone.Format: Author- Last Name, First Initial. (Copyright Year). Title. City work was published in: Publisher3. Article or Periodical: Klein, J. (1998, October 5). Dizzy Days. The New Yorker, 40-45. Format: Author-Last Name, First Initial. (Year, Month and Day). Title of Written Piece. First, all references should be alphabetized by the last name of the authors. The CCI Library webpage provides an excellent online source at your fingertips. When Should You Use In-Text Citations? When quoting any words that are not your own; quoting means to repeat another source word for word, use quotation marks.2. When summarizing facts and ideas from a source:Summarizing means to take ideas from a large passage of another source and condense them using your own words.3. When paraphrasing a source:Paraphrasing means to use the ideas from another source, but change the phrasing into your own words. Common knowledge (information that most people would know): For example, the fact that Ottawa is the capital of Canada is common knowledge and doesn’t need a citation; but if you write that the population of Ottawa in 1980 was 1,987,213 then you do need to present a citation to show where you found that statistic If a source has no date, then use the abbreviation n.d. for “no date”. So how do I document using APA? How are the two parts connected? To avoid plagiarizing you MUST have BOTH citations AND a Reference page ................
