34th annual conference of the Association for

Teacher Education in Europe

29 August - 2 September 2009

Palma de Mallorca, University of the Balearic Islands

The Organising Commitee of the 34th ATEE Conference 2009 would like to welcome all

the participants who are attending the ATEE annual conference at the University of the

Balearic Islands in Palma de Mallorca. The event is being organized by the International

Educative and Scientific Cooperation Office of the Department of Education in

Catalonia and the University of the Balearic Islands in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, and it

is our privilege to host you.

We would like to thank all the plenary speakers who have accepted to present at this

conference as they are international expertise in the field of education. We are also

grateful to the people who will present at the conference for the high quality of their

papers, which will contribute to make this conference be the right international forum

to share knowledge on teacher education. We are grateful to the Academic

Committee of this conference for the evaluation process and the papers¡¯ distribution

carried out.

We would also like to thank all the institutions which have helped us carry out this

conference. We are grateful to the ATEE Presidency, the ATEE AC, ATEE Secretariat, the

ATEE RDC chairs, the International Educative and Scientific Cooperation Office of the

Department of Education in Catalonia, the UIB, the Conselleria d¡¯educaci¨® i Cultura de

la Comunitat Aut¨°noma de les Illes Balears: the ICE, the department of Spanish,

Modern and Latin Philology, the department of Psychology and the department of

pedagogy, the CAIB, the Department of the Ministry of Education in Spain and the

Govern de les Illes Balears. We would also like to express our gratitude to the OISE-IKIT of

the University of Toronto for their strong collaboration and commitment with the

conference. Finally, we would like to thank some private and public institutions which

have also collaborated in the conference.

Main theme of the conference:

Knowledge Creativity in Teacher Education Education for Knowledge Creation

The theme of the conference will be centered on what is known about Knowledge

Creation (KC) in different cultures as well as which mindsets are most appropriate to

develop KC in Teacher Education for a world which demands creativity of the many,

not just of a few artists and research scientists.

At present, Europe needs to strengthen its capacity for creativity to respond effectively

to the development of a knowledge society. Therefore, educational training systems

should cater to the development of competences by supporting creativity, with a view

to finding original solutions to various life aspects of either a personal, occupational or

social nature.

The main objective of the Conference is to find out whether educational practices of

today¡¯s institutions, which offer initial and/or in-service teacher education, provide

effective solutions toward cultivating the learning dispositions that underpin creativity.

Thus, there are challenging conceptual issues about whether educational goals for

knowledge creation should be formulated in terms of skills, knowledge, habits of mind,

personal traits, character development or acculturation, among others.
