|Job Purpose: |

| |

|To undertake research in line with the research strategy of Modern Languages, to teach applied linguistics/ English language education at |

|undergraduate and postgraduate level through face to face and online modes, to undertake research supervision in these areas, and to participate in|

|the administration of Modern Languages. |

|1. Develop the research activities of Modern Languages by sustaining an original research plan in applied linguistics/ | |

|English language education, within the overall strategy established by the Institute for Language and Culture and the Centre |40% |

|for Linguistics, Language Education and Acquisition Research. Sustain and develop a range of research methodologies, |(1-3) |

|approaches and techniques appropriate to research in these fields. | |

|2. Build an international reputation for research in applied linguistics/ English language education by disseminating | |

|findings through leading peer-reviewed publications and other media, in formats consistent with REF targets, presenting | |

|results at academic conferences, and/or engaging in knowledge transfer and activities promoting the public impact of | |

|research. | |

|3. Contribute to the planning and development of innovative research proposals, projects and funding bids in applied | |

|linguistics/ English language education, and collaborate with others in furthering shared research objectives. | |

|4. Support the teaching objectives of the Department of Modern Languages by undertaking high quality research-led teaching | |

|in applied linguistics/ English language education appropriate to a diverse student body, at UG and PG levels, both face to | |

|face and online. | |

|5. Directly supervise postgraduate students, identifying the learning needs of students from diverse backgrounds and |(4-6) |

|defining learning objectives. Promote the use of appropriate media to support student learning in different modes (f2f, | |

|blended and online). Set and mark coursework and other forms of assessment, providing constructive feedback to students. | |

|Supervise theses, dissertations and projects both face to face and at a distance, providing consistent support, guidance and | |

|feedback. | |

|6. Plan and develop innovative contributions to learning, teaching and assessment methods within applied linguistics/ English| |

|language programmes. Monitor, evaluate and revise programme design to ensure excellence and coherence as well as fitness | |

|for purpose. | |

|7. Contribute to the efficient management and administration of the Department by performing administrative duties as | |

|allocated by the Head (e.g. in student recruitment or pastoral care), and by taking on appropriate coordinating roles. | |

|8. At level 5 the post holder will be required to demonstrate ongoing experience of all of the following; developing | |

|bids/building external relationships/pursuing new teaching and/or assessment processes, supervising research students and, in| |
