QUEEN’S UNIVERSITY, KINGSTON, CANADA

UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA, EDMONTON, CANADA

UNDERGRADUATE EXCHANGE

3 x £750 TRAVEL AWARDS

The terms of the agreement allow for up to four students to go to Alberta from Queen’s each year. Students are encouraged to go for a full year, as courses may run for two terms. The University of Alberta is a diverse institution with approximately 38,000 students. It offers a wide range of recreational, cultural, social and educational activities in addition to its academic programs. The international student body totals approximately 7,000+ students from all over the world.

More information on the University and the International Centre is available at studyincanada.ualberta.ca.

The University of Alberta is located in the City of Edmonton (.edmonton.ab.ca), the capital of the Province of Alberta. Edmonton has a population of approximately 1,035,000 people. There are several excellent theatre groups, a symphony and an opera company, as well as numerous museums, art galleries, cinemas and restaurants. Students enjoy an exceptional quality of life on a friendly campus in the midst of a city that values research and technology as well as its beautiful river-valley parkland. Further information on Edmonton may be obtained from Edmonton Tourism ().

How to Apply

You can download an application form from the Global Opportunities website at . The form should be completed only once. You should rank the university(ies) you are interested in attending. You should also complete the Course Selection Form for the university you rank as first choice. A reference should be attached to your application (two in the case of Joint Honours students).

Catalogues (or prospectuses) are available online at the websites shown on page 3. Please also note that the courses you choose will need to fulfil the requirements of your degree course here; hence you may not have the breadth of choice available to a normal Alberta undergraduate.

Deadline

All application forms must be returned to the Information Desk in the Student Guidance Centre by 2.00 pm on Friday 08 February 2019. Interviews will take place on Wednesday 20 February 2019. You should make sure that you will be available on this date.

Courses

The Exchange operates in most subject areas - see the attached subject lists on page 4. Information on courses is available online - see the web addresses below for details. You should complete the relevant Course Selection Form (available on the Global Opportunities website). You should select courses totalling 24 credit points for the academic year (or 12 per term). Full year courses are normally worth 6 points (marked *6). Single term courses are normally worth 3 credit points (*3). Only students admitted into the School of Business (ie. who have a significant prior subject knowledge) are eligible to take business classes. Some subjects are restricted and are not normally available, ie Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Criminology, Computer Engineering and some courses in Business/Accounting.

Students wishing to take music courses will have to provide an audition recording for submission to the University of Alberta if they are offered a place on the exchange programme.

If you are interested in applying, contact your Adviser of Studies or the International Adviser or Director of Education in your Queen’s School; they will need to ensure that the courses you select are acceptable as a programme of studies contributing to your degree. If you are a Joint Honours student, you should inform the International Adviser or Director of Education for each subject.

If you are selected:

Maintenance

You will not have to pay tuition fees at Alberta, but will be responsible for paying your own living costs (including housing), and medical insurance.

A travel award of £750 will be given to each successful applicant by QUB. Students who return early from the exchange programme without good reason (eg medical) will be required to repay this travel award.

NI/GB/EU students spending the full year in Alberta will be required to pay half the normal tuition fee to QUB for the 2018-19 year. NI/GB/EU students spending only one semester in Alberta will be required to pay the normal full tuition fee to QUB for the 2019-20 year. International students spending either the full year or one semester in Alberta will be required to pay the normal full tuition fee to QUB for the 2019-20 year. If your tuition fees are normally paid by your Education & Library Board or student loan company, this should still be the case for your exchange year or semester.

The sum required to cover living costs in Alberta for the academic year (8 months) is estimated to be between CAN $13,320 to $14,160. See . If you receive a local authority maintenance grant or loan, you will continue to do so during your year in Canada, but you can normally apply for a supplementary (higher rate) loan to assist with additional costs. Those students who qualify for a supplement may also be eligible for travel grants within the UK student support arrangements. Students should apply to their Education & Library Board or Student Loan Company for a supplement to their normal level of funding.

You, or your parents, will be asked to certify that you (or they) are able to provide any additional finance needed over and above your local authority grant/loan. Queen’s University cannot accept any financial responsibility on your behalf. If you are supported by your parents, you should check that they are happy with the financial arrangements before you apply for the exchange. If you receive financial sponsorship from the armed forces or an industrial firm, you should check that your sponsor has no objection to your taking part in the exchange.

Study Permit

In order to enter Canada, you will need to apply for a Study Permit from the Canadian High Commission (Immigration Division) 38 Grosvenor Street, London W1X 0AA. The current fee is CAN $150 (approximately £89). See web link cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/student.asp. You will be sent further information if you are selected. If you intend to visit the United States while you are in Canada, you are strongly advised to obtain a US tourist visa before you leave the UK.

Accommodation

The exchange agreement between Queen’s University and the University of Alberta covers mutual tuition fee waiver, but not room and board. Housing can be guaranteed only for students starting in September and if completed housing applications and deposit are submitted before 30 April. Housing cannot be guaranteed for students starting in January. For current rates and application forms, see the Residence Services website at . There is normally a $25 non-refundable application fee for all Residences.

Health Insurance

.

In addition you are advised to take out further insurance cover for travel and personal belongings. Whilst we cannot recommend an insurer, you might want to consider the following options:

STA Travel - statravel.co.uk/travel-insurance.htm

Coe Connections - coeconnections.co.uk

Work Permits

Immigration regulations allow foreign students to work on campus. If you are registered as a full-time student at the University of Alberta, a Study Permit is sufficient documentation for working at the University of Alberta. Part-time employment is not guaranteed, so you should not be reliant on finding part-time employment to fund your expenses in Alberta. Exchange students are not permitted to work off campus.

Universal Transit Pass (U-PASS)

University of Alberta students are required to purchase a U-Pass.  Anyone with a U-Pass will have unlimited access to all Edmonton, St Alberta and Strathcona County Transit Services including the Light Rail System (LRT) which runs from the University to the north end of the city.   The cost of the U-Pass is approximately CAN $148 per term and the fee is compulsory for all students.
