CHECKLIST FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS
____1. For information about the Criminal Justice or Homeland Security Masters online
degree programs from Sul Ross State University, go to: sulross.edu/hscj, or
contact the Homeland Security and Criminal Justice office at 432-837-8166.
____2. Fill out the online application for graduate students. From the Sul Ross homepage:
sulross.edu, roll over “Apply”; “Graduate Students”; “Apply Texas” fill out the form and pay the appropriate fee.
____3. Have official transcripts of all college work attempted and degrees conferred sent to the Registrars office. (The Registrars office keeps all transcripts and information in their office until all the information is received. It is then forwarded to the HSCJ
Graduate Coordinator.)
____4. After you receive confirmation of your acceptance to the SRSU Masters program,
you need to fill out the “Application for Graduate Degree Plan”, which can be
found on the Homeland Security and Criminal Justice website. (sulross.edu/hscj
– Forms – Graduate Degree Plan Application). You need to indicate, on this form, if
you want to work towards a Masters in Criminal Justice (non-thesis or thesis),
Homeland Security, or dual degree. For more information on these options go to:
sulross.edu/hscj - Master’s Program. You will need to fill out and sign the
Degree Plan Application and return the form to the Graduate Coordinator.
____5. If any substitution is made on your degree plan after it has been approved, a Course
Substitution Form must be completed by the Graduate Coordinator and submitted to the Dean of Professional Studies.
____6. Once enrolled at SRSU, if you plan to take courses at another university and transfer
the credits to Sul Ross you must get permission from the Graduate Coordinator to do
so BEFORE you register for it. It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to have transcripts
sent to Sul Ross for courses taken after your degree plan has been approved.
NOTE: One of the biggest problems we have clearing students for graduation is that we do not have the course substitution forms and transcripts for the transfer courses.
____7. Submit an Application for Admission to Candidacy as soon as you complete
twelve graduate credit hours from Sul Ross. (This form is also available at
sulross.edu/hscj – Forms – Admission to Candidacy) This must be done at least
one semester prior to graduation.
____8. After completing 24 hours of graduate classes, contact the Criminal Justice Graduate Coordinator for instructions concerning the comprehensive examination. If you are
working towards a dual degree you will also need to take a comprehensive exam for
the Public Administration degree. For more information on the PA exam go to:
____9. Complete an Application for Graduation form by the appropriate deadline.

the graduation fees (apply and pay twice for the dual degree) and make sure to attach
a copy of the receipt with the application and send it to the appropriate Dean’s office.
